Hay imágenes que permanecerán en la retina de todos aquellos que las vieron y experimentaron en su momento. La patada que el competidor cubano de Taekwondo le propinó al árbitro de pura impotencia y desesperación es una de ellas. A finales del siglo XX, una imagen simplificada del luchador Andre el Gigante en blanco y negro junto al lema “Obey” –“obedece”– comenzaba a verse en unos enigmáticos posters que poblaban las ciudades de Europa. No era otra cosa que el proyecto de un estudiante de diseño norteamericano llamado Shepard Fairey. Aquella imagen se convirtió en un icono y referente de lo que a día de hoy significa el nombre “Obey – Giant”, incrustada en el inconsciente de una generación amamantada con la televisión, las modas norteamericanas y una desidia promovida gracias, en parte, a la falta de valores o referentes. Esa generación de hijos de la transición y el cambio político en España, que debería –al igual que sus mayores– prestar atención a los proyectos artísticos del colectivo Democracia. Igual de icónico fue Mel Cheren –el dueño de West End Records–, cuya figura se ha convertido a partes iguales en estandarte del movimiento de clubs y la música de baile así como de la lucha contra el SIDA y los prejuicios homófobos. Y si Mel Cheren es ya un referente para la música de baile, también lo es –y como– Larry Heard. El señor Fingers puso ladrillo a ladrillo las bases de lo que hoy conocemos por música house. El entorno musical es muy dado a la idolatría fácil, pero ciertos personajes sobrepasan las fronteras de las tendencias, convirtiéndose en figuras que serán recordadas por siempre. Y sería raro pensar que un grupo de la pequeña ciudad de Port Arthur, en Texas, podría llegar a alcanzar este estatus. Pero así es. UGK pasará a los libros, y tras la muerte de Pimp C, Bun B –la otra mitad del combo– sigue en activo para demostrar que la leyenda sigue viva. Esto y mucho más en una nueva entrega de Serie B. There are certain images that remain in the retina of those who saw them and experienced them at that time. The high kick that the Cuban contestant utterd to the referee out of powerlessness and desperation is one of them. At the dawn of the 20th century, a simplyfied black and white image of wrestler André the Giant next to the word “Obey” was starting to be seen on some enigmatic posters that covered European cities walls. It was nothing but the project of an American design student by the name of Shepard Fairey. That image became an icon and a referent of what the name “Obey-Giant” means today, and that icon is stuck in the minds of a whole generation breastfed with TV, American trends and a slackness that was maybe the result of the lack of values and referents. That is the the generation of the “Transición” and the political change in Spain, a generation that should pay attention to the art prrojects of the Democracia collective. As iconic as tthat image was Mel Cheren –owner of West end Records–, whose image is both the banner of the dance music and club movement aswell as of the fight against AIDS and homophobic prejudices. And if Mel Cheren is staple of dance music, so is –and how– Larry Heard. Mr. Fingers built, brick by brick, what we know today as house music. This music enviroment is very prone to idolatry, but certain characters exceed the borders of trends, becoming figures that will always be remembered. And it would be hard to think that a rap group hailing from a small town in Texas called Port Arthur could reach that status. The name UGK will be written in the books of music history, and after the death of Pimp C, Bun B is still holding it down to show that the legend is still alive.
