Qui a dit que l'industriel old-school était mort ? Pas le label CD-R Steelkraft Manufactory (émanation de Steelwork Maschine) en tous cas, qui prouve régulièrement que le genre a encore toute sa raison d'être à travers des productions limitées à cent exemplaires, ce qui est ici démontré avec éclat par "Nord" le second album du projet belge Service Special qui a absolument tout compris aux schémas industriels et les retraduit à sa sauce. Le "Nord" de notre voisin, c'est une ambiance lourde et pesante, des guitares qui vrombissent comme des rasoirs électriques, des synthés funèbres et dissonants, des voix atones et rares et aucune, mais alors aucune, concession à la modernité. Tout ici aurait pu être enregistré entre 1978 et 1982, ce qui n'est nullement un reproche, loin de là, tant il suffit d'écouter "M.H" ou "Purpurines" pour comprendre que l'essentiel est là.

'Nord' represents the second full length work of Sebastian Schmit (K-Branding) and it's an extremely eclectic work that boils with restraint. Deep, dark electronics fluctuate over rumbling currents of noise, that in themselves remain distant instead of choking foreground sounds. The electronic beats and syncopation employed on tracks such as 'Transhumanism' and 'M.H.' harkens back to the disturbances of SPK while in other places there are hints of Throbbing Gristle. But, this is no exploration of ego, rather the minimalism of each sound signature allows each track to coalesce musically into something quite unique - the almost flat-lining manipulation and expansive frequencies evident on 'Epaulard' being a case in point. Throughout 'Nord' the variance of devices used adds a vitality and a greater relevance to the sounds which are thus produced. The percussive synchs, electronic cut-ups, loops and fragmented voices all bleed towards the latter half of 'Nord'. The noise flowing through 'Purpurines' is almost organic in it's pulsating passages, revealing a brutality that is only just held in check before spikes of noise release a veritable storm. The sound collages of 'Terrifying Powers' and captive beats and frequencies of 'Les disciplines associées' soon submit to the tumbling cauldrons of noise that spill intermittently on 'Queens' and 'Fields & Screens', the album closers. 'Nord' engages because it does not follow a single pattern of expression only, rather it grips the listener through a fabric of the intelligent use of regulated signatures, cautious drones, structured compositions and reverberating electronics. The overall sound is of a very established piece of work that draws one in through both concordance and dissonance resulting in a fresh and vital release.

Sebastien Schmit, seines Zeichens auch tätig bei der belgischen Formation K-branding, veröffentlicht mit seinem Soloprojekt Service Special sein zweites Album mit dem Titel “Nord”, welches eine “altertümliche” Melange aus den Stilen Industrial, Noise, Punk, Minimal, Electro und Cold Wave zutage fördert, die zwischen den Polen Experimentalität, Obskurität & Tanzbarkeit wandelt.
“Nord” erblickte das Licht der Welt in einer limitierten Auflage von 100 Exemplaren über das französische Label Steelkraft Manufactory die Subdivision von Steelwork Maschine, wo seit Jahren feine old-schoolige Industrialkultur erscheint, welche vornehmlich älteres Publikum in seinen Bann ziehen dürfte.
Inhaltlich bereitet der Belgier mit diesem Oeuvre “Nord” ein Spektrum von der philosophischen Denkrichtung (Transhumanismus) bis hin zur Monarchie (Queens) auf, wodurch Sebastien Schmit vorwiegend das nachdenkliche & gesellschaftskritische Publikum anlockt bzw. bedient, welches bestimmt gerne seinen Ausführungen folgt.
Musikalisch bekommt der geneigte Hörerkreis auf dieser Veröffentlichung lupenreinen Industrial nach alt überlieferter Machart “vorgesetzt”, den der Erschaffer mit Stilmitteln aus den Genres Punk, Minimal, Noise und Cold Wave (die französische Variante des Dark Waves) verknüpfte. Zur Akzentuierung einzelner Tracks verwendete der Protagonist männliche wie weibliche Sprachsamples (Natürlich in Französisch!), die er an einigen Stellen “aufblitzen” lässt. Die zu vernehmenden Stimmungen auf “Nord” reichen von Bedrohlichkeit bis psychedelischer “Verführung” und lassen zu keiner Sekunde des Releases Langeweile aufkommen. Im Besonderen zu erwähnen seien noch die vielseitigen Rhythmen, die auf der einen Seite aus dem Bereich Industrial/ Noise stammen und zum Anderen aus dem Sektor Minimal/ Electro rühren, wodurch sich ein vielschichtiges Hörerlebnis einstellt. Diejenigen, die eine mehrheitlich stringente Publikation mit einem hohen Experimentierfreudigkeitsgrad & viel “Abgedrehtheit” wünschen und für Zwischendurch ein wenig Tanzbarkeit benötigen, sollten “Nord” von Service Special bzw. Sebastien Schmit unbedingt antesten.
Eigentlich wollte meine Person auf die Nennung eines expliziten Anspieltipps verzichten, aber die Nummer ‘M.H.’ entwickelte durch seine Kombination aus Tanzbarkeit wie berauschender Atmosphäre schnell Ohrwurmcharakter, weshalb hier eine Empfehlung “prangt”.
Fazit:
Das belgische Projekt Service Special von Sebastien Schmit überzeugt in allen Punkten (Atmosphären, Rhythmik, Kompositionen usw.) durch einen enormen Abwechslungsreichtum, der in einigen Momenten sogar erschlagen mag, aber im Endeffekt ein “Leckerbissen” für anspruchsvolle Individuen darstellt, die industrielle Hochkultur zu schätzen wie lieben wissen – meine absolute Kaufempfehlung!
