About me:
I am Joe Sestak. I grew up in Delaware County and am the son of an immigrant. I attended both grade school and Cardinal OHara High School in Springfield Township before entering the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Prior to leaving naval service after 31 years and returning home to Delaware County, I attained the rank of Vice Admiral after having had a series of operational commands at sea, including Commander of an aircraft carrier battle group of 30 U.S. and allied ships that conducted combat operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I have a Doctorate in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University, and served as the Director of Defense Policy in the White House during the Clinton Administration. Since graduating from the Naval Academy, I served my nation with great pride and commitment. I now wish to serve my local community and my country with that same level of pride and commitment, taking seriously the Academys stated mission to develop midshipmen not just for a career of naval service, but for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of citizenship and government.
Therefore, I have decided to run for Congress in the 7th District of Pennsylvania, because Congress has enacted laws that do not have the security of our children as their first priority. If it did, Congress would not be passing tax and spending policies that will burden our children, and their childrens children, with higher taxes for decades to come. This burgeoning debt means decreased funding for needed health, education and defense initiatives. Our nations current health and educational policies are denying our children the prospects for a fulfilling and productive future, a healthy old age and the collective prosperity our nation needs to be secure. Also, our defense policies are eroding our childrens future global defense security as the tragic misadventure in Iraq continues to pursue elusive, ever-changing goals at the cost of strategic interests elsewhere.
True national security is more than just security from terrorism as the current Administration is currently portraying. I believe I can make a difference in reversing the erosion of our countrys four key pillars of national security -- economic security, health security, educational security and defense security. I will do this by using my experience to provide Leadership with a Vision -- a vision that shows it is possible to have what is most important: to raise our children well; to own a decent home; to educate our children; to create a secure retirement; and to live a healthy life within a nation that is prosperous and safe.
We cannot do that unless we change Congress. We must elect representatives of the people who are ready to lead with a vision, and will stop mortgaging our childrens future for short-sighted, self-interests. We must elect representatives that will pursue policies that will revitalize our economy, protect healthcare, promote public education and provide for a sensible defense security in order to ensure our childrens future safety and prosperity. I intend to be one of those new Representatives of the people to provide that safety and prosperity to our children.
