An aspiring young American choral composer and choral conductor, Seth Garrepy (b. 1986) is a bright star quickly gaining a reputation in the musical world for his breathtakingly beautiful works and perceptive musical interpretations. One director remarked on the acute “expressive quality” his music possesses. The premieres of his works have been generously received in halls ranging from university venues to performing arts centers.
“Luminous” and “crystalline” are two words describing Mr. Garrepy’s music. His sensitivity to mood and attention to stylistic details enhances the text’s natural charm and illuminates its transcendental beauty. The last two of his “Four Songs of Light” have received repeat performances; “O Nata Lux” was recently recorded as the title track for their newest album by Canadian chamber choir,
musica intima; “Glorious Benediction” received its worldwide premiere, under his baton, at the University of Oklahoma. All have received praise from audiences of diverse tastes.
Garrepy’s conducting experience with choirs has yielded several successful premieres of his works under his direction. In 2006 alone, he guest conducted choirs in four concerts, often premiering new works. He recently completed his masters degree in choral conducting under Dr. Robby Greenlee at the University of Oklahoma (OU). He plans to pursue a doctorate in choral conducting and teach the choral arts at the university level.
Garrepy has received several composition awards and academic honors. In 2007, he was honored by Oral Roberts University as both “Music Composition Major of the Year” and “School of Arts & Sciences Student of the Year.” Faculty members hailed his senior recital as “the best recital to have come out of this institution yet.” In 2007, his “O Nata Lux” was selected as one of the winners of the Virginia Brooks Composition Competition in Tulsa, OK.
Currently, he is writing independently for his publishing company, Lux de Lumine Productions, and preparing to teach choir at a public high school in Oklahoma. His wife, Stacey, is preparing to begin her masters degree in musicology at the University of Oklahoma this fall.
Mr. Garrepy currently holds his bachelor of music degree in composition from Oral Roberts University (graduated
summa cum laude) and a master of music degree in choral conducting from the University of Oklahoma (graduated
with distinction.
