   About Seth Garrepy

An aspiring young American choral composer and choral conductor, Seth Garrepy (b. 1986) is a bright star quickly gaining a reputation in the musical world for his breathtakingly beautiful works and perceptive musical interpretations. One director remarked on the acute “expressive quality” his music possesses. The premieres of his works have been generously received in halls ranging from university venues to performing arts centers.

“Luminous” and “crystalline” are two words describing Mr. Garrepy’s music. His sensitivity to mood and attention to stylistic details enhances the text’s natural charm and illuminates its transcendental beauty. The last two of his “Four Songs of Light” have received repeat performances; “O Nata Lux” was recently recorded as the title track for their newest album by Canadian chamber choir, musica intima; “Glorious Benediction” received its worldwide premiere, under his baton, at the University of Oklahoma. All have received praise from audiences of diverse tastes.

Garrepy’s conducting experience with choirs has yielded several successful premieres of his works under his direction. In 2006 alone, he guest conducted choirs in four concerts, often premiering new works. He recently completed his masters degree in choral conducting under Dr. Robby Greenlee at the University of Oklahoma (OU). He plans to pursue a doctorate in choral conducting and teach the choral arts at the university level.

Garrepy has received several composition awards and academic honors. In 2007, he was honored by Oral Roberts University as both “Music Composition Major of the Year” and “School of Arts & Sciences Student of the Year.” Faculty members hailed his senior recital as “the best recital to have come out of this institution yet.” In 2007, his “O Nata Lux” was selected as one of the winners of the Virginia Brooks Composition Competition in Tulsa, OK.

Currently, he is writing independently for his publishing company, Lux de Lumine Productions, and preparing to teach choir at a public high school in Oklahoma. His wife, Stacey, is preparing to begin her masters degree in musicology at the University of Oklahoma this fall.

Mr. Garrepy currently holds his bachelor of music degree in composition from Oral Roberts University (graduated summa cum laude) and a master of music degree in choral conducting from the University of Oklahoma (graduated with distinction.

Seth Garrepy is an ASCAP affiliated writer, and he is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the College Music Society (CMS), and Mu Phi Epsilon. Seth is available to write on commission.

Hello!

I haven't been on here much lately, so now that I am, I will stop by and poke around your page a bit. How are you doing? I just got back on Monday from Orlando, Florida. I'm sure you are familliar with Sherief, where I was writing/recording music with Sherief. The music sounds lovely and we had a lot of fun being creative. I haven't written music in years and suddenly I am doing it every day! I am enjoying life and thankful for the many blessings.

Enjoy your weekend. :)

You changed your picture! :)

How's life lately? I see Stacey all the time, but no Seth...Seth is off tackling the art of choral conducting. When you get your first job with some famous orchestra, you really need to send me tickets. ;)

Hey long lost friend! We need to catch up sometime... I was in OKC a few weeks ago, but by the time I knew I had time to hang out... it was kinda last min. so I didn't want to bother you. Anyway, give me a call sometime when you're not too busy... yay for grad school that takes up every waking moment :)

Thank you Seth. Your words mean a lot. The Requiem is one of those pieces that "wrote itself". It is strange in some ways since it is one of my favorite pieces, but I did not work on it very much. Maybe it wasn't needed since so many feelings were attached from the start. Often when I compose I don't know what I am going to write when I start. I just improvise until I have a melody I like. With this piece I had a specific thought.

Dear Seth

I know Mahler's Tenth Symphony really well. I worked for 16 years for the company that publishes that work. I know really well both the Matthews brothers who helped work on that publication and also the very famous Donald Mitchell who writes the Mahler books. It's an awesome work. It inspired some of the passages in my own 5th Symphony, which to date has not had a complete performance!

Stay in touch

Adrian
