Seven Rise Up was founded by Cody Perkins and Jason Johnson during their High School Years. The idea was to bring the message of Christ to those who needed it most. By doing the thing that they loved, Heavy Metal. There where many years of learning their instruments and how to compose quality music. Over time they grew as brothers and found out how much their ideas where musically different but complimented each other. Cody always brought a little chaos to the table, and Jason found a way to structure it with other riffs.
Over time many members joined and quit. Seven Rise Up was like a rotating door for local musicians who wanted to play heavy metal. The only thing that remained the same was their focus on delivering a message. Seven Rise Up released their first album during this time called “To Be Continued….” The album had some mistakes and was not the best of quality. It was recorded over a series of 2 sessions because of the lack of funds due to being teenagers. During this time David Sutherland began to film a documentary that was based upon Cody’s life. This continued to play out a normal everyday expectancy for the band. Toward the end of the filming of this documentary Cody and Jason found another brother to work in this ministry with, Anthony Fraley.
Anthony had seen Seven Rise Up play a show during the fall of 2001. He enjoyed the performance, even though his ears literally bled after (we played very loud). Then Anthony met up with Jason at a Christian metal radio show on Morehead States campus. After talking many times about him joining the band he finally gave it a shot. Only after a month of rehearsal he played his first show with the band. After that he was hooked and became the solid bass player that Cody and Jason always wanted.
Seven Rise Up then began work on a new album. This proved to be more of a hassle then any of them expected. The material was written and the band began to buy equipment to record the album with. Once everything started to flow and the ruff tracks where laid down, a flood destroyed Jason’s home and a lot of the bands equipment. This set the band back some time. During the recovering process the band realized its weak links and worked to fix the problems. This once again resulted in a lineup change.
After time, the band reworked some old material and wrote some new. Things started flowing better and more shows where played. “The Battlefield” was released in 2006 shortly after the premier of David Sutherland’s Country Boys that featured Cody. The band then picked up distribution help from Young Side Records and moved forward in accomplishing their childhood goals. After radio interviews, playing shows in new places, picking up sales of the new CD, and many other exciting times things started to change.
The End of Seven Rise Up was among the members yet none of them had expected it. Due to changes in Cody’s life he was led away from performing in a Christian ministry. In a mess of confusion, Anthony and Jason struggled to find the answers of what was in their future. Of Course Cody being a founding member, Seven Rise Up saw its last shows.
Seven Rise Up is now history. It was a time of excitement, change, and realization for every member ever involved in the project. Like most good things, it eventually had to end. Cody, Anthony and Jason are still friends and keep in touch. Jason and Anthony went on and started a new ministry (Bellor (www.myspace.com/bellorpage) with friends of the past. Cody is now a family man raising his son and soon to be daughter, also working on different musical projects.
May the music of this ministry live on, may the messages brought forth still be heard. This world needed this ministry and needed the messages it brought. May each person who reads this be blessed by the story told because we can all learn from the history of others.
