On 13th May 2006 Sunbridge Road Mission, Bradford, hosted the inaugural 'Punk Worship' event. The event had been in the making for over a year beforehand and aimed to show people that church can be enjoyed and that worship can be loud and passionate without drawing the attention away from God. Feedback from the event was positive and the CD, 'Open Your Eyes', was recorded in November that year.
The CD was officially launced at the follow-up event and Christmas Special, PW2, on 9th December 2006. PW2 featured a short set of carols sung in the trade-mark punk-rock stylings of the band. That's all they were known as, 'The Band', and talks began of giving 'The Band' an official name and branding. In June, 'The Band' headed down to Essex to play at Project Dave and were asked to do a covers set as well as the worship - a few practises later and 'The Band' managed to throw together a short set of covers, but the main priority was still on worship.
Jumping on to October 2007, Punk Worship returned in the form of PW 3volution - worship had finally evolved! The event featured a set of Christian Rock covers by artists like MxPx, The OC Supertones, YFriday and even an acoustic song thrown in for good measure! 'The Band' was definitely changing in terms of versatility and it was felt that 'Punk Worship' was not really a suitable name for the event. The word 'Punk' itself seemed to be off-putting for some people who would appreciate the music but not necessarily associate themselves with 'punk'.
After much discussion it was decided that 'The Band' would become 'seventyseventimes' (or '77x' for short) after Matthew 18 v22 where Peter asks "How many times should I forgive my brother?". We all make mistakes and it is a good reminder that God will always forgive us; As a band, 77x need to ensure that the purpose of their existence is to have a heart for worship and to lead others in worshipping our Awesome God.
In April 2008 77x will be recording a follow up CD at Voltage Studios in Bradford and the official launch of both the CD and the rebranded band will take place in May at the 4th 'punk worship' event, heart4worship in Bradford. The idea is the same: worship God in an honest and passionate way led by rock/punk music - only the name has changed!
Ever wanted to experience worship in a different style? Normal church services a bit too dull for your liking? Then fear not: seventyseventimes have arrived! Your favourite worship songs but with attitude!
