What people are saying about my books:

Blurbs for the novel Shara

It’s a fresh update on the werewolf mythos that I dug the hell out of.
-- Brian Keene, author of The Rising and Terminal

A terse, tense literary throwback to the Universal horror films of the ‘30s and ‘40s, Shara is that rare commodity among horror novels: a book that manages to be both frightening and fun while breathing new life into one of the genre’s oldest tropes. Steven Wedel’s rock-solid debut pegs him as a writer to watch. Especially when the moon is full...
--Gary A. Braunbeck, author of Things Left Behind and The Indifference of Heaven

Shara is an adventuresome, colorful, and compelling horror story that breaks the traditional werewolf rules and offers us a new kind of beast of burden. Here you’ll find believable characters, non-stop action, and cliff-hanging suspense that keeps the narrative gears shifting when you least expect it. Wedel’s smooth prose is vivid, engaging and sharp as a wolf’s claw.
--Tom Piccirilli, author of The Night Class and A Choir of Ill Children

There is incredible depth to this book … there is romance, mystery, action, and even slice-of-life contemporary fiction. Wedel flows between them all with deft ease.
-- City Slab magazine

... a haunting wild and beautiful story of a woman’s struggle to survive … Shara is caught between two worlds, where normal existence and love and family seem not an option.
-- Blood Rose magazine

[T]he book is easy to read and well-plotted ... The characters are likable and the story gripping. But you will need to leave the lights on.
-- The Oklahoman

Absolutely refreshing! A new spin on one of the oldest subgenres in Horror, Shara is a classic tale in a modern novel that leaves you breathless, desperately hoping ‘the pack’ has more to tell! Written with such skill and clarity of his characters, you don’t even notice Wedel’s writing style at all. Completely dimensional characters that you can reach out and touch make the story, and easily pull you into the pages.
-- Horror Web

Steven E. Wedel’s Shara is thoroughly beguiling. Caught between two worlds, accepted by neither, we accompany Shara on her terrifying, supernatural journey to belong, and indeed to survive the perils and torments that threaten at every turn. Mr. Wedel’s beautiful, soul-searching narrative and startling imagery sweep us along with Shara to the thrilling conclusion, and he leaves us breathless.
--Diana Barron, author of Phantom Feast

In Shara, Steve Wedel does for werewolves what Joss Whedon and Buffy accomplished with vampires. A modern take on a classical beast, Shara delivers in every way and leaves the reader begging for the next chapter.
-- M. Stephen Lukac, author of Oogie Boogie Central

Not since I read Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot as a teenager have I been so enthralled by a novel dealing with a classic Horror archetype. This work grabbed me by the throat and would not let me go!
--Michael West, author of The Wide Game

Blurbs for the novella Murdered by Human Wolves

[T]he journey is fascinating … The whole of the story is made more chilling by an interview that Wedel includes in the back ...
-- The SF Site

Wedel makes Little Red Riding Hood’s fairy-tale seem possible. He took truths, added evidence, and then set his imagination free. Wedel’s tale is a suspenseful page-turner. He’s included everything, a terrifying plot at a breakneck pace with vividly drawn characters.
-- Yet Another Book Review Site

It’s spooky and intriguing, and the same can certainly be said for Steven Wedel’s writing. Wedel lets his imagination run loose on [the] darker side, populating it with a clan of werewolf who are pagan, wild, bestial, and dare I say, pretty darn sexy.
-- The Horror Fiction Review

Murdered by Human Wolves is an amazing tale that introduces you to the innocence and curiosity of youth, the dangers around them, and leaves you thinking. Monsters DO exist. Besides those of folklore, legend, and fiction - we meet and greet them every day and unbeknownst to us, they carry on. This story offers several ‘monsters’ - you decide who the real monsters are! Fast paced with wonderful characters, Wedel gives us another piece of his vision with style and atmosphere.
-- Horror Web

“Murdered by Human Wolves” is sandwiched between an intriguing foreword and an eerie interview with paranormal researcher Mary Franklin. The foreword tantalizes with “based on a true story” tidbits, and the un-embellished interview with Franklin should send shivers up the spine of a non-skeptic.
-- Tangent Online

Blurbs for the novella Seven Days in Benevolence

Seven Days in Benevolence is an exciting paranormal thriller. The story is action filled and progresses at a nice speed. The characters are very well developed.
--Blether Book Reviews

Blurbs for the collection Call to the Hunt

Wedel’s fiction is muscular, in the style of Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe series. He shines in the historical, action-oriented arenas … It’s a fine little collection. I enjoyed reading it.
-- Horror World

Fans of werewolf thrillers will want to howl with this strong twelve story compilation ... Readers will feast on this fabulous journey...
-- Harriet Klausner

Wedel writes believable stories that are effective with their imagery ... I enjoyed this anthology … It was fresh and wholesome, in a canine-pointy-toothed kind of way!
-- SF Crow’s Nest

As if Wedel’s Shara wasn’t enough, this collection has truly renewed my interest in werewolves ... the style of writing is so superbly smooth you feel like you’re conversing or even watching the events unfold live! This collection of stories are short, sweet, and brutal... I had forgotten how vicious werewolves were!
-- Horror-Web

Blurbs for the collection Darkscapes

Steven E. Wedel, who has a background in journalism, puts his news writing experience to good use in his fiction. With an eye for detail that lends credibility to his stories, he uses setting, mood and atmosphere to enrich his work and immerse the reader in the tales. His stories are original, well-written and often chilling looks at human nature and the human mind under extreme circumstances. If you are a fan of dark fiction, this is a collection you will not want to miss. Steven E. Wedel is an author whose time has come.
-- Shannon Riley, Tapestry magazine

Hi! Just wanted to make sure all my friends know that my new erotic horror novel THE 13TH is now in stores everywhere! I hope you'll check out this debauched and demonic horror ride!

There's even a website devoted just to the book, with an interactive map of the places and characters at www.the13th-horror.com.

Edward Lee called THE 13TH "A double-barreled shotgun blast of macabre entertainment -- an expert amalgamation of grotesquerie, eroticism, mystery, and pitch-black occult horror that no fan of the genre can miss."

And Gary A. Braunbeck said, "John Everson's The 13th is the first out-and-out horror novel in a long while to actually scare the **** out of me while reading it. It's stylish, extremely well-written, filled with richly-drawn characterizations, and boasts a labyrinthine plot worthy of Umberto Eco. Trust me -- this one will fry your nerves and break your heart."

I came across it in the Gallery Bookstore on Belmont Avenue. It has a huge section of Horror, both new and used, and even old chapbooks.

The new Wolfman film looks pretty intense.

Have an awesome Halloween!

I love reading psychological horror, and I really enjoyed Little Graveyard on the Prairie. My grandparents have a farm in southern Illinois, so I could identify with the atmosphere and setting of your story. I love ghosts. We’re going hunting for Resurrection Mary, one of our famous ghosts, on Halloween night here in Chicago.

I’m looking for a way to survive these insanely long and boring winters here, so I plan on filling up my shelves with horror reads. What are you writing now?

Stay Dark!
