  • Bio

Sex Face are a three piece experimental funk group from Melbourne, The trio draw influence from funk, latin, experimental and hip hop music to create an ever changing half composed half spontaneous journey that shifts between slow grooves to hard hitting dance floor mayhem. Comprised of past members of the John Butler Trio, Epicure and Johnny Amigo, Sex Face relentlessly pursue a sound unto their own, push the boundaries at their live shows, and are always on a savage journey to the heart of sound.

Suggestive name, surprisingly serious funk Sex Face don’t make the kind of music you would expect from a band comprising past members of Epicure and John Butler Trio; the Melbourne three-piece’s self-titled debut occupies a place in the spectrum between contemporary and experimental funk. Their 12-minute odyssey Sandfly Raga is more the former, the EP’s opening tracks – Kapow, Bwow and Intolerable Vibrations – leaning towards the latter. Despite the experimental nature and suggestive moniker Sex Face produce serious music, generally steering clear of cheesy, 1970s-porn-soundtrack funk. Instead they opt for quirky, angular riffs, left-field effects and chuntering bass held together by Corey Keem’s tight drumming. The absence of a vocalist forces the music to constantly evolve and, barring a couple of lapses, it avoids monotonous repetition. Selecting five quite distinct tracks for the EP was wise too, as these recordings will likely never measure up to the energetic and varied live show they foreshadow. NILS HAY, Rave Magazine
