In March of 1969, when I got to Danang, Vietnam, I was a green 19 year-old radio operator with the 11th Marines. About that time, the movie, "True Grit" came out with John Wayne, who played the part of a US Marshall. A born and bred Okie, naturally, I got stuck with the nickname "Grit". I'd like to say it was because of my John Wayne type persona, but unfortunately, it was only because I was from Oklahoma. As I moved up in rank, Grit moved up with me and I became "Sgt Grit". I was in Vietnam from March, 1969 to October, 1970 and loved it so much, I even extended my tour.
When I started this business in 1988, my wife suggested I take back the name, Sgt Grit. It began with one t-shirt and a strong desire to help Marines. It progressed from being a business run out of the basement of my home, to a 12,500 sq. ft. warehouse and showroom with everything a Marine can imagine.
