Shannon Beck a performing songwriter, comes to Shades of Red from years of solo and “collaborative performance.” Her first CD, Window Open Wide, receives air play on folk stations around the nation. (www.ShannonBeck.com) According to Victory Review’s Bill Fisher, “it is the character of Beck’s voice that first catches our attention and holds on tightly, sometimes insistent as, say, Joanne Rand, sometimes as gentle as a John Denver ballad. … (The lyrics) after a few listenings, take on the quality of a friend’s open-hearted conversation..” Beck joins Shades of Red for their tight harmonies, thoughtful writing and adept musicianship. On guitar and vocals, Beck is excited to collaborate with this talented musicians on the verge of something big.
Jack Brand is a composer, arranger and songwriter who lives in Woodinville, WA. He learned piano at a young age and taught himself guitar in high school. He holds a degree in Music Composition from the University of Missouri but makes no excuse for being an avid student of Top 40/Pop/Rock over the years. He loves the diverse talent and intensely collaborative spirit within Shades of Red, which continually pushes him to new musical places.
Bret Harwood grew up around musicians and has loved music as long as he can remember. He began playing the trombone at age 10 in the school band. At age 16, he realized that his true love was the drums so he convinced his parents to buy him a drum set for Christmas. A week later, he was in his first band, and he hasn't stopped since. Growing up in Texas allowed Bret to experience and play many different styles of music making him a very "well rounded" drummer with an strong ability to improvise. He prefers solid, tasteful beats to flashy playing. Although Shades of Red would be considered "light" compared to what Bret is accustomed to playing, he looks forward to making good music with good musicians.
Mark Hopkins has been a musician since the age of 10 when he joined the school band playing drums and trumpet. These days, he focuses on playing guitar, bass and drums. He has been writing his own music since high school. He also owns a recording studio and has produced CDs for many Seattle area bands. While Mark's background leans toward harder rock than Shades of Red plays, he is thoroughly enjoying the change of pace and the chance to explore music with such a talented group of musicians.
Solveig Whittle has been singing folk, blues and rock since college with a variety of partners and bands. She has been playing the flute since 6th grade (thanks to Mr. Howard Borodin, music teacher), but she discovered she really liked harmonizing while singing in her high school choir. She still loves the thrill of participating in Handel's Messiah public sing-alongs. She enjoys hearing new pop music on the radio (with the exception of the Umbrella Song). This is a good thing, since her teenage daughters will not allow her to listen to NPR while they are riding in the car with her.
