| About Shadowplay: Wellygothnight (RIP) |
We are sad to announce the regretful end of Shadowplay events in Wellington. This is largely due to the unfortunate closure of Valve who have hosted Shadowplay every month for almost the last two years.
We'd like to thank Valve - Greg and Andy - for their support and for helping us run the event. They've been a pleasure to work with - relaxed about running gigs, letting us try some unusual things (burlesque dancing, peircing displays, fashion shows and barbeques among them), and ultra supportive of the goth and industrial scene in Wellington. Almost a built in fixture to Valve is Blair (Moose), who's provided sound engineering for several of the gigs (especially the bigger ones). Blair's knowledge of the room and gear at Valve, as well as how this sort of music is supposed to sound, has been priceless, and part of what ensures that the bands (and audience) get a pleasant experience. Thanks Blair :)
We'd like to thank Dayv Death at Calico Jack's Boutique on Ghuznee St in Wellington. Dayv is Calico Jack, and has sponsered every Shadowplay event from Shadowplay II onwards, as well as several other events along the way. His continued support and enthusiasm has helped no end, and Dayv is a big part of what has made Shadowplay possible.
We'd also like to thank the bands, DJs and performers who've entertained everyone at Shadowplay. Each performer has provided something unique and special to Shadowplay. I'm amazed that we managed to get all the way through two years of monthly gigs, largely without repeating acts (although there were definitely a couple of exceptions to that). For anyone that thought New Zealand and Wellington in particular didn't have a great scene, it's pretty obvious - especially when you look at the following list - that we have a bunch of awesome, talented people creating fantastic art and music in and around our town (and country).

I really hope I haven't forgotten anyone.
Although they didn't end up getting to play, I would also like to include The Society Ladies, who were due to be December's featuring band, as well as three other bands - Kapuut Mortum, Codeine Like Candy, and Nute - who were scheduled to play but unfortunately couldn't make it for various reasons, which is fine. Sometimes these things happen, and when you've been playing in bands and running gigs of varying scale for more than a decade, you know what it's like. We're looking forward to getting all these bands - plus the various other bands from all around the country who never featured at Shadowplay - onto the bills of some other events in the future.
Speaking of other events in the future... Shadowplay's time has come and gone. But this just opens up room, (and organisational time) for more events, bigger and better, in the future - and that's exactly what we plan to do. Duncan and I have already got our thinking caps on (I'm not sure they ever really come off) about what's next. Some ideas are in the pipeline, but we'll have to see where they take us. So keep an eye out.
In the meantime (and beyond), I strongly encourage anyone who's got the remotest interest in it to have a go and put on their own gigs (whether you're in Wellington or somewhere else completely). Some people are doing this already, which is great. It doesn't have to be of epic scale either - even if it's just a party at your house/flat with a band and/or a couple of DJs, that's awesome. Sometimes those things can get pretty epic anyway, moreso than in a bar :) But when different people run the shows you get different ideas and tastes and venues thrown into the mix, which just make it all a richer experience. And if these events happen, I strongly encourage anyone who's got even a remote interest in our scene and our music to head along. It's only through everyone showing interest and support that scenes like ours, in places as small as ours, can survive.
Lastly, for anyone into nostalgia, here are a bunch of photos from various Shadowplay events.
There are heaps more in the (sadly incomplete) photo gallery at the Shadowplay myspace.
From Brad and Duncan,
Thanks everyone.
