GeneralI, your humble author Willy Greer, am a bona fide horror geek. I co-host an online radio show devoted exclusively to horror film soundtracks and discussion ( www.myspace.com/horrorholocaust ), and am scoring the soundtrack for the upcoming Lovecraft adaptation CTHULHU (www.cthulhuthemovie.com). Obviously, horror cinema is something I'm very invested in. I have worked hard to make SHADOW PLAY a unique, lucid and intelligent read.
MoviesSHADOW PLAY analyzes the following movies: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD '68, DAWN OF THE DEAD '78 and '04, DAY OF THE DEAD, LAND OF THE DEAD, HALLOWEEN, TENEBRE, THE BEYOND, HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, ALIENS, SHAUN OF THE DEAD, GINGER SNAPS, MAY, PHENOMENA, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE '03, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, ALONE IN THE DARK, 28 DAYS LATER, IRREVERSIBLE, PREY, MARTIN, CHRISTMAS EVIL, THE PROWLER, BUBBA HO-TEP, CEMETERY MAN, SANTA SANGRE, GHOST SHIP, DARKNESS FALLS, MOJU: THE BLIND BEAST, LOVE OBJECT, THE PIT, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, THE HOWLING, DAGON, LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH, THE THING '82, THEY LIVE, PRINCE OF DARKNESS, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3, SESSION 9, BLUE SUNSHINE, JUST BEFORE DAWN, THE EYE, RINGU, THE RING, JU-ON, THE GRUGE, ORGAN, AFTERMATH, GENESIS, MANIAC, EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD, FLOWER OF FLESH AND BLOOD, EVIL DEAD TRAP, EVIL DEAD TRAP 2, ANTHROPOPHAGUS, BEYOND THE DARKNESS, LUCKER THE NECROPHAGUS, NEKROMANTIK, SCHRAMM, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, THE LAST BROADCAST, THE DESCENT, and more.

About me:
SHADOW PLAY: PHILOSOPHY AND PSYCHOLOGY OF THE MODERN HORROR FILM is an analysis of the last forty years of horror cinema, from the grindhouse freakouts to the artsy-fartsy existentialist pieces. It dives down into the text and subtext of over seventy movies, trying to find the essence of what makes them succeed or fail. In the process, author Willy Greer discovers new perspectives on many of these films, which will likely turn the heads of even die-hard horror fans, who have seen these films hundreds of times. Greer dives headfirst into these films with a writing style best described as "academic subject matter discussed in a conversational voice". SHADOW PLAY is unlike any horror crititicism book you have read. It looks at horror cinema not simply as Freudian indulgence of the id, but more importantly, as Jungian confrontation and catharsis of the shadow-self that resides in us all. SHADOW PLAY is now looking for a good home with a caring publishing house.
Who I'd like to meet:
Readers, critics, publishers and horror film fans. If you like what you read here, please, tell a friend.

Hi! Just wanted to make sure all my friends know that my new erotic horror novel THE 13TH is now in stores everywhere! I hope you'll check out this debauched and demonic horror ride!

There's even a website devoted just to the book, with an interactive map of the places and characters at www.the13th-horror.com.

Edward Lee called THE 13TH "A double-barreled shotgun blast of macabre entertainment -- an expert amalgamation of grotesquerie, eroticism, mystery, and pitch-black occult horror that no fan of the genre can miss."

And Gary A. Braunbeck said, "John Everson's The 13th is the first out-and-out horror novel in a long while to actually scare the **** out of me while reading it. It's stylish, extremely well-written, filled with richly-drawn characterizations, and boasts a labyrinthine plot worthy of Umberto Eco. Trust me -- this one will fry your nerves and break your heart."

Hi! Just wanted to make sure all my friends know that my 2nd horror novel SACRIFICE is now in stores everywhere, including Amazon.com! I hope you'll check out this debauched and demonic horror ride! Here are a couple reviews it's gotten so far:

“SACRIFICE is a full frontal assault on your senses. It is a dark, brutal, bloody and terribly frightening book. Everson went deep into some dark abyss to bring this book to the light of day.... I highly recommend SACRIFICE.”
—Famous Monsters of Filmland

“John Everson manages in SACRIFICE to dispense buckets of blood, provide edgy perversity, and walk the tenuous tightrope of horror and sex without falling: It’s rather an amazing feat.” –Hell Notes

Christmas is a Time for Magic!!

I've stepped a little outside my normal "horror writer" persona this week :-) To celebrate the season, I've created a Holiday Madness page, with links to a free Christmas short fantasy story ("Christmas, The Hard Way"), a rock 'n' roll holiday song I wrote and recorded a few years ago ("Show Me Christmas"), holiday wallpaper for your computer and more. You can hear the song and follow the link from my MySpace page, or just click the banner below. Darkest Holidays to you!

Hi Shadow Play!

It's Friday - and for me, for the first time in years, that means 2 straight weeks of Christmas vacation!!! I've got a stack of books to read and DVDs I want to sit down to watch with my trusty bottle of Makers Mark at my side :-)

Anyway, I just wanted to say Merry Christmas, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday, filled with all the dark dreams you can imagine. Here's to putting a stake through the heart of 2006 and pinning garlic to the breast of 2007!!

Yours in Dark Arts,

John

Christmas is a Time for Magic!!

Hi Shadow Play!
A few weeks ago, I posted one of my most popular short stories, "Pumpkin Head" on my web site to celebrate Halloween. It got such a great response, I thought I'd offer something new for Christmas! Recently in an interview, someone asked if I ever write fiction outside of the horror genre. The answer is...absolutely! Several of my lighter fantasy pieces appear in my Vigilantes of Love collection, including the story "Christmas, the Hard Way," which features white magic and a ghostly aunt. I originally wrote and distributed the story in a small chapbook to friends and family for the holidays several years ago before it was printed in the book.
Over the past decade, I've celebrated Christmas with a variety of similar creative projects, and I've posted some of them online for you and your friends and families to enjoy! You can read "Christmas the Hard Way," listen to a holiday song I wrote, download wallpaper for your computer AND get a special offer on buying some books if you want (and remember, they make great gifts!!!)

Just visit my John Everson Christmas page for the holiday madness - and Merry Christmas to you and yours!!

October is here - my favorite month of the year!!

To celebrate, I've posted one of my most popular stories, "Pumpkin Head" on my web site for my MySpace friends. This twisted, disastrously dark story of what befalls a boy who defiles a pumpkin first appeared in Grue magazine back in 1998, and has since been reprinted three times. It will appear in a French translation next year. But you can read it here.

Take a peek...if you dare! And Happy Halloween!
