ShadowTone is Gavin Foo and Juliet Foss... 2 individuals who met whilst studying Sound Engineering at The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA)... based (only currently) in Perth, Western Australia, the most isolated city in the world.
Originating in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur & Ipoh), Gavin spent most of his early childhood learning various musical instruments before landing on guitar. constant practice and jams with cousin Bryan Yoa, landed him with the playing style of a metal / rock / blues guitarist until he arrived in Perth in 2002, forming original bands Masonary (2002) and Seven (2003).
Juliet spent alot of time on the piano, starting from an early age, not a stranger to the concert hall and to performing live on her own, further continued her talents when she started studying classical piano & music at the University of Western Australia. In the meantime also travelling backwards and forwards from Italy (her 2nd home), living and visiting various places including Milan, Florence, Perugia & Tuscany.
Coincidentally put together on the same production, we started hanging out and listening to music, getting each other into new forms and styles which we ended up REALLY enjoying.
We had both joined the course, more for developing our skills as recording engineers to learn the technical aspects of recording and producing music, so we could put our ideas and dreams onto a medium, be it tape or digital.
After meeting midyear 2005, sound experimentation started in our bedrooms. We locked ourselves up and manipulated the sounds we had recorded and started to work with each other's previous musical ideas.
After listening and analysing, the songs we manipulated started to come to life. Arguments and agreements started on whether there should be a process, or a style, or a concept... this went on til only very recently in April 2006, when we realized we had almost half an album's worth of material that sounded unalike any other band before us
The major differences in influences between Gavin (metal and rock guitar influence) and Juliet (classically trained and quite the theoretical mastermind) made the sound of the project quite unique in a sense that we had found a middle ground without looking for it, but found it in hearing and experimentation. Extremely happy, is the only way to describe our feelings towards the music, because we believe the world needs an extreme change, especially in the direction of music, as it is becoming so commercialised and stale.
We are working on finishing an album by December 06' and also expanding our majorly studio based work into a live project.
