BIOGRAPHY OF DJ SHAKA23: THE SOUND OF FUTURE ELECTRO DISCO HOUSE:
Shaka23 grew up on the Southside of Chicago during the onset of the underground house music movement. Her fascination with house music began at the young age of 7 when her brother brought home Technics turntables and began to DJ. She regularly listened to WBMX's infamous radio show with the legendary Djs of the Hot Mix 5 and went to see house DJ's and performers at "Dancing Wheels" roller rink. Her inner city cultural landscape also exposed her to the art of break dancing, graffiti, turntablism, and the rave scene. The combination of these impressions motivated her to pursue DJing with relentless dedication.
Throughout her career, she developed her own unique sound and skills, taking inspiration from a range of the the most prolific innovators and DJs of electronic music. She's DJ'ed amongst some of today's biggest legends including, but not limited to, Frankie Knuckles, Mr. Fingers, Green Velvet, Felix da Housecat, Claude Von Stroke, and Stretch Armstrong.
Undoubtedly, over her 10 years spinning, she has become well versed in many forms of music, from house to disco, and minimal to electro. With an ear for cutting edge music combined with her knowledge of house history, Shaka23 continues to push boundaries and experiment with both her DJ and production styles. Each of her sets are fresh, with spot on mixing, spontaneous track selection and intuitive programming. .
Shaka23 relocated to New York City in 2007, where she continues to passionately explore and promote the history, life, and growth of underground music. Now under new booking and management with PROPER PERSPECTIVE, she is currently focused on touring, remix work, and a new production project with house legend, Jamie Principle. Her new event "SUBSTANCE" held monthly at 205 club in the lower east side is already being praised as the hot new underground New York City party.
