Shakey Bones -- "damn, I am witnessing rock and roll"
Barely of legal drinking ages, Shakey Bones are on a quickly escalating uprise within the local San Francisco context. Synthesizing folk and punk with refreshing genuinity, they forge complex, relentlessly catchy, and often touching songs about how boring it is to live in Walnut Creek. Once they got enough money together to go "electromagnetic", they took off in the Shakey Bus (an all purpose van-sometimes-house guilded with imagery of soup, dinosaurs, and of course, bones). Live, Shakey Bones put on a show encouraging motion, participation, and having a good time. The melodies recquire singing (or shouting) along, and as they said at Bottom of the Hill, "if the band is dancing more than the audience.. well, the band is cooler than the audience!". Although folk/punk is the genre most often slapped onto them, for real, they're music defies those sort of limitations; more than anything, it's exciting, and well executed. Shakey Bones are one of those rare artists that manage to pick out the chord progressions that speak to audiences on an emotional level (the kind that make goosebumps erupt), yet once a solo kicks in, it leaves you thinking "damn, I am witnessing rock and roll!"
Shakey Bones played from January 2006 - August 2007. It all started in Dub-C, California. Our name came from a skeleton hand holding a broken wine glass, Zack noticed it after waking up from his sleep under the living room table, woke Sean up and said "Shakey Bones broke the glass!!!" Zack and Sean played banjo and guitar together in the very beginning, along with Stiv on the Stivharp. The beginning formation spent most of the time busking on the streets of Dub-C, and eventually recruited the upright bass playing Zeebo. We spent our first few months playing various folk/blues songs (and recorded the first 9-song demo) and eventually worked ourself into a fully functional street band. Tilton joined us ukulele soon after Stiv moved to LA, and Zeebo went on to do what Zeebo does best. Bryan joined us on bass, and this became our solid lineup.
Our mode of transportation was a sheik, brown van named as the "Shakey Bus." On a short trip to Santa Cruz where we played mostly on Pacific Avenue and wherever people would have us, we were invited to do a live radio show on Freak Radio Santa Cruz which is what was later cut into the Pirate Radio cd. We played on the streets of Berkeley and San Francisco, but soon realized that our bounderies were limitless. The O.G. Shakey Bus eventually died of terminal heart problems, R.I.P. O.G. Shakey Bus...
We made our first attempt at "going electric" to accompany Abi Yoyos on their Summer 2006 tour, but instead kept the acoustic setup and played as such all across the country. We spent hours upon hours burning CD's and busking for gas money after purchasing the new Shakey Bus. We painted it up with a giant bowl of soup, dinosaurs, cockroaches, broken televisions, skulls, trees, and flying feet symbols, and hit the road. Many hearts were touched along or first full U.S. tour, thank you to all those who supported us. After conquering the U.S., we came home and recorded the Soup E.P..
After staying home a short bit, we quickly decided it was lame to be in one place, and continued touring anywhere we could. In that summer and fall we played insane amounts of shows all over the place with great bands all over the country. On the way down to our first show of our 3rd tour, we had a very serious meeting in a garlic field in Gilroy, about the future of Shakey Bones.
Sean, the original drummer and one of the founding members left the band in early 2007. We eventually started playing with Nelson, and successfully made the electric transformation which was functional for a few months in 2007. We never released anything electric, but we recorded a few practices, and there's a few songs available, you can write us if you want access to them.
We played our last show August 17th, 2007 at 924 Gilman St. and it ruled. It was a split set of electric and acoustic versions of Shakey Bones. You probabaly should have been there.
Although we do not play together anymore, all of us are still playing great music and having wonderful travels. Shakey Bones music is still available, and will always and forever be open to whoever would like to hear it. There are still some old CD's laying around, let us know if you'd like a copy of any of the three albums.
