MIKE SIPIN- GUITAR/VOCALS:
Mike has had a long and storied musical career. He has found the perfect balance between music, martial arts, running herd over 7 children, and owning his own gunsmith shop. Mike, a Milwaukee native, started playing while most of us were trying to figure out how to eat Playdough. His first influence was his father who played Hawaiian swing on steel guitar. From the lap of his father, Mike was exposed to his earliest influences that contained all of the great players of the 50’s and 60’s. As an adult, Mike played in many, esteemed local bands, including the Ozaukee county Jam Band, and many others, covering R&B, Blues, Bluegrass and Country; all spread and seasoned with Rock and Roll. Mike, a very spiritual guy, has a center that allows him to lead. From his choice of music for the band to play, to having a terrific onstage persona and charisma, he was born to entertain. Any band would be lucky to have his skills …fortunately, Shakey Ground is the proud possessor of his leadership and talent. Don’t miss an opportunity to see this man in action!
MIKE HAUPT- REEDS:
Mike is an incredible sax player, adding fire and drive to all of his solos. His background is full of tasty influences from the likes of Sanborn, Tom Scott, Hank Crawford, and Johnny Colla. Mike studied music and performed with Berklee alumni Aaron Santee. He studied with David Gross of the 60’s icon band, “Electric Flag” and writer for Musician Magazine. And he studied with Milwaukee Symphony reed player, Michael Cheskevitch. Music theory runs out of Mike’s ears. Mike has played with just about everyone of note in the Milwaukee area, such as The Ozaukee County Jam Band, Peter Alt of Bluehand, Todd Stephens, Susan Julian, and countless others. Mike has spent a lot of time over the course of his career in the studio providing bedrock skills for other bands, helping their sound become dazzling. Mike adds the perfect touch of discretion and explosion to the sound of Shakey Ground. A perfect soul mate.
PHIL KOHN- BASSIST:
Phil has had a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Growing up in the L.A. area, he was exposed to the explosion of the music scene of the 60’s. At a youthful 24, Phil joined the English cult band, “Curved Air.” This was to be the band’s 5th album. Phil played next to “Police” drummer, Stewart Copeland. Phil spent 3 years with the band. Upon his return to the U.S., he opened his own recording and production studio in L.A. He managed and produced a bevy of projects that would go on to get national record deals. During this time, he became partners with a well known L.A. disc jockey and had their own TV show focusing on 50’s and 60’s rock star interviews. The highlight of this time was his tutelage under the mentorship of Hal Blaine (Hall of Fame Drummer). Phil was given the opportunity to record alongside Hal for soundtracks and commercials. They remain friends to this day. Phil played with ex-Savoy Brown vocalist, Todd Hart while living in Phoenix.
MICHAEL LEE SIPIN JR- DRUMS:
He is no kid, so don't be messin' with him. Junior is a talented and experienced drummer and vocalist who is maybe more fun to watch than his old man. He couldn't walk, yet....but he would crawl to the kitchen-cabinets where he would remove the hidden pots and pans on which he would play with anything he could find for sticks. The young man was four years old when he played his first solo in Cedarburg, WI on an open-air stage at night. Mike Senior's band at the time was playing for a celebration of the opening of the re-done Hwy.57 when the drummer, Randy Liska, placed junior on the drums under the stage-lights during a break. Never faltering once, the small boy lit into a several-minute ground-pound that drove the audience into cheers and applause and heralded much more rhythm to come. Many years of training and experience later; Junior also did a stint with his father in the Ozaukee County Jam Band. Providing solid bottom for Shakey Ground with bassist Phil Kohn fires-up a whole, new and driven sound.
