There will come a day when the rockers, rollers, deviants and freaks that give Detroit it’s gritty sheen will sit back in their worn easy chairs, spark up a Marlboro Red and say, “do you remember the Shakey Jakes?” It’s inevitable really. This is a city that revels, not in tiresome longevity, but in musical projects that burn out before they fade away.
Soaked through in Motor City spirit, this is a band that recalls the raw honesty of Elmore James, the soulful fire of Humble Pie, the uncompromising attack of Rose Tattoo and the fuzzed-out crunch of Tad. This is no-frills, fuck-you rock ‘n’ roll in the purest sense, exquisitely executed by 4 of the most sickeningly talented bastards in the city.
The Jakes – Chuck, David, Art and Chris - are young enough to be better looking than you, yet are old enough to have seen, heard and played everything. They bought the t-shirt, wore the t-shirt, then gave the t-shirt away and bought a better t-shirt.
How long will the Shakey Jakes be around? Nobody knows. What cannot be denied is that, while the Shakey Jakes exist, Detroit feels that little bit cooler and more dangerous. And who knew that was possible.
