About me: Shakey’s® Pizza Parlor was founded April 30, 1954, in Sacramento Calif., by college friends and fishing buddies, Sherwood “Shakey” Johnson and Ed Plummer. The nickname “Shakey” was affectionately given to Johnson by Navy mates who noticed his hands shook after a bout of malaria suffered during WWII.
An entertainer—both a comedian and musician—throughout high school and in college, Shakey Johnson opened the original restaurant, at 57th and J as a beer hall with live music performances nightly. Shakey himself entertained guests by playing Dixieland or rag-time music on the parlor’s piano and on his own banjo.
The first weekend Shakey’s opened, the establishment sold only draught beer. The following Monday, Shakey had enough money to purchase groceries and began serving food. He recalled the round, thin-crusted pies from his tour of Italy during the war and decided that is what his establishment would serve—pizza. Shakey Johnson’s pizza parlor is credited with having been the “pizza that started it all™.”
Shakey’s Pizza Parlor soon became widely known outside Sacramento, not for its pizza, but for the jazz program it sponsored on a regional radio network. Sherwood “Shakey” Johnson was named the “Emperor of Jazz” at Sacramento’s first Jazz Jubilee and is an honored musician in the Banjo Hall of Fame in Guthrie, Oklahoma.
A second Shakey's Pizza Parlor opened in Portland, Oregon, in 1956 and the next year was the first pizza restaurant in the U.S. to franchise. Shakey’s franchises popped up all over the western region and began expanding into parts of the Midwest and eastern states.
There are currently 50 Shakey’s Pizza Parlors in the U.S. today, mostly concentrated in Southern California. An aggressive growth plan set forth by CEO, Tim Pulido, provides for franchise and corporate expansion into the Midwest and eastern states over the next 10 to 15 years. Between the 15 corporate stores and 35 franchises, Shakey’s Pizza Parlors boast annual revenue of $60 million.
For more than 50 years, Shakey’s has been the place for family and friends to enjoy good food and good times. To stay top of mind in American pop culture, amid a variety of popular fast food and family restaurant casual chains, Shakey’s CEO, Tim Pulido, has outlined a 5-year revitalization plan contemporizing the brand with a new look and menu that reflects a shift in American attitudes toward style and health.
Still the place to go for thin crust pizza, crispy fried chicken and famous Mojo® Potatoes, Shakey’s Pizza Parlor offers a stylish adult atmosphere where grown-ups can indulge in delicious gourmet pizzas, fresh-tossed specialty salads, and Firestone micro brewed beers. The new and emboldened brand finds itself a leader among other fast casual dining and has committed to cooking with only trans fat -free oils.
Kids can go bonkers in the state-of-the-art entertainment zone complete with classic redemption games, and multiple-sensory arcade and interactive 3D video games.
