Following the 2008 smash debut ’Up Against The Wall Motherfuckers We Are Sha La Las’ and two years of constant reckless touring comes ‘Ode To Nothing’. The first single to be released from Sha La Las forthcoming album ‘White Fever’ also marks newfound creative heights for the band as well as a new highly fruitful collaboration with mixing board mastermind Paul Schroeder (Stone Roses, The Verve, The Others…).
And as far as ‘Ode To Nothing’ goes one could say that while the debut’s somewhat wide eyed romantic garage pop helped establish the band throughout Europe as intractably unabashed underground outsiders to be reckoned with, ‘Ode To Nothing’ trades in the debut’s up-tempo euphoria for a harder, darker, tighter, more pissed off and impertinent kamikaze pop noir. But that’s just words. And as far as words go you could say that the track finds Sha La Las somewhat in between Nirvana, Ziggy era Bowie, Pistols, Talking Heads, Replacements, Hanoi Rocks, Sigue Sigue Sputnik and Carpenters, but such vain categorizations just doesn’t quite cut it. However, to honour the distinction it’s safe to say though, that where the debut primarily took on contemporary rock’n’roll, ‘Ode to Nothing’ takes on the whole world, pop culture and mankind in one glorious leap of lacking faith.
The title says it all really. It’s angst, alienation, restlessness and boredom wrapped up in a celebratory life defying sonic outburst of hellraising dancehall decadence and drunken victory. And from the intro’s wasted hooligan swagger, through the anthemic chorus, over the cut-up avant-garde pop breakdown of the solo part, to the symphonic outro it’s the most ballsy and triumphant effort from Sha La Las so far. Maybe even the most daring and visionary 3 minute pop single since ‘Good Vibrations’, but who’s to tell? And then again, that’s just words, and this is just a good ole straight up defiant pop tune for all it’s worth, and probably all the better for it...!!???
