hives of bees wrapping around your head and stinging your eyes as two people sing softly in stereo inside your head in a grain silo.
formed officially in kansas city, mo in summer of 2001 when tyler received an offer to open for the liars. moved to portland, or in summer of 2002. released first album 'blue-eyed' on their own endless december recordings label in november of 2004 amidst several moves, unemployment, soul-sucking poverty and self-loathing. some of the songs had been in the recording process since april of 2001. stefanie joined in december of 2004. her first show in shalloboi was at the knitting factory in l.a. in february of 2005. moved back to kansas city for the summer in 2005 while going on a commuter tour. released 'invisible against the sun' ep in november of 2005 after moving to chicago, amidst more poverty, more unemployment and more soul-sucking poverty and self-loathing. much of the songs had been recorded in portland in stefanie's aunt and uncle's guest house (well, at least the loud bits). cello parts for all songs recorded with billy speer in july of 2005. october of 2006 saw the release of 'petals' amidst... i'm sure you get the idea. the songs were mostly recorded in portland in july of 2003. cello parts for all songs recorded with billy speer in st. paul, mn in march of 2006. 'learning how to crawl' was released in september 2007- which took the band's sound and placed it in a drier, more acoustic based and more restrained context. 'down to sleep' was released in july of 2008. this newest release was culled from a cycle of 25 songs that were recorded over a two and a half year process and feature some more fully fleshed-out string parts incorporating the use of violin for the first time as well as stefanie goodwin's transition to the use of live drums. the songs are almost purely droned based with a few exceptions and the guitars more heavily textured. all effects (except for guitar effects) were achieved with the use of large spaces serving as echo chambers (i.e. stairwells and large empty spaces in the congress theater). the 'dandelions' ep (released in summer 2009) follows on and points the direction towards 'all hope is blind'- a vinyl only release that the band are busy putting the finishing touches on. 'all hope is blind' constitutes a fuller use of live strings, more condensed songs (a few clock in at under three minutes) that leave more breathing room and the most subdued and minimalist exercise the band has attempted so far.
