Shalom is an accomplished singer/songwriter who has been performing professionally for eight years..... Prior to her professional work, Shalom performed as the solo singer of Benjamin's Big Band (BBB), a 30-piece jazz/swing group based in the north of Sydney. This group toured annually to local festivals, and then underwent a major tour to Canada and the USA. The highlights of this international tour was singing at Montreal Jazz Festival and in New York's Central Park..... Shalom was with BBB for eight years, and during this time launched her professional career as a 'vintage' blues/jazz singer. In 2003 she formed her own quintet which performed in Sydney venues and festivals across NSW. Over three years the group performed regularly at Australia's oldest jazz venue El Rocco amongst other residencies..... Shalom's repertoire is bold - with songs made famous by artists with extraordinary voices such as Etta James, Dinah Washington and Bessie Smith. She also sourced unusual repertoire from writers such as WC Handy and works performed by Elvis Presley in his early years..... Currently Shalom performs these songs at special private events with some of Sydney's leading instrumentalists..... Another project Shalom developed is Songs of Leading Ladies - a tribute to film actresses of the silver screen from the 1940s-50s. Collaborating with the wonderful Mark Harris Quartet, Shalom conjures the essence of leading ladies such as Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, Vera Lynn and Judy Garland..... Whilst interpreting works by some of the best songwriters of the 20th century, Shalom has been quietly penning her own songs. In early 2008, she was fortunate to be re-introduced to former high school classmate Jordan Roach who is an awesome guitarist. They jammed together for most of the year before making their debut as an indi blues/roots band called Tortured Willow. This music unleashes Shalom's wailing blues vocals together with Robert Johnson style guitar. The lyrics are personal and close to the bone, and the sound is raw and earthy. 2009 saw them performing in some of Sydney's best venues including the Metro, Factory Theatre, Supperclub and Fringe Bar..... 2010 has been just as exciting. They performed at the Australian National Blues Festival and plan to release their first EP soon. See myspace.com/torturedwillow.....
