Formed in the early 90s, the Shame Idols released two critically-lauded albums in the mid-'90s on the estimable Frontier Records. Singer/songwriter and guitarist Tim Boykin (ex-Carnival Season) formed the group in Birmingham in 1993 when his previous group, Pinky The Stabber, split up. The other band members, guitarist Bryan Price, bassist Buddy Banks, and drummer Jesse-Diego Suttle, had previously played together in the punk band Working Mothers.
An early fan of the group, the Young Fresh Fellows' Scott McCaughey, hooked the band up with his then-current label, Frontier, and also introduced him to Seattle-based indie producer extraordinaire Conrad Uno, who produced both 1995's I Got Time and 1996's Rocket Cat. The Shame Idols slpit up in the late 90s, Boykin doing several albums with power pop favorites the Lolas.
In September 2004 Shame Idols start to rehearse after not playing together for several years. New member Alan Helms, who played with Bryan and Jesse in Working Mothers, is added on bass guitar. Local shows and new material are well-received, and the band set about recording their third album, The Light Is Always On.
The Dogs from Detroit Rock City celebrate their 40th anniversary w/t 2 Disks, 25 tribute bands, 3 unreleased historic tracks from The Dogs from 1971 & 1976, 28 page booklet, liner notes by John Sinclair (MC5) and cover artwork by Rockin' Jellybean!!
I picked up the first Topper Price & The Upsetters CD yesterday at Charlemagne, great playing by ya back in 93, I am hoping the album he was working .. he passed away gets out there, I am thinking it would be his best. I wasn't able to make it to the Workplay show, which would have been cool, we threw together a group for the Memorial at The Nick a few days after, I played with "Rooster" Brantley, Taylor Hollingsworth's rythmn section, Brian and Macy JR, and Jason from The Righteous Bastards, I just wanted to play to show some support, I have met him but didn't know him personally, Our band Furthermore played at The Benefit, mainly to show support for his friends and a couple of guys in my band knew him, Danny and Daniel, but, I know Workplay was the place where those who really played with him did their thing including you. He had a great voice.
Well, we were in the same place at the same time at some point when we were kids. Born in San Jose CA, Grandparents in Pacific Grove, my parents died in a plane crash when I was 6 , private Cessna in Livermore CA with my Uncle and Grandfather, and they are buried on the Monterey Peninsula in a graveyard down the street from a lighthouse across the street from the ocean, Monterey Bay outer edge. Moved in with my Aunt and Uncle in Las Vegas 6 months, then Fresno from age 6 to 17. I went to Wolters Elementary, but lived near Eaton Elementary, (summer school at Robinson Elementary), if you were into music then, you probably knew where Tower Records and Wherehouse records were, also there was a poster headshop called Penny Candy, the big music instrument store was called Soundstage if any of that rings a bell, went to Ahwahnee Junior High. Age 17, senior year moved to Salt Lake City, that is where I met Parrish started writing originals, where I bought my first Marshall MachII 100 Watt Fawn finish stack and several guitars. You can see my first year Dean ML in my Karma flyer in my pics. Went to college in Ephraim, UT, Snow College I was a music Major, short stint at University of utah, then moved to Venezuela for 18 months in Maracaibo, Barquisimeto, Cabimas and Machiques, came back went to school in Provo, UT for a year, then moved to So Cal to audition for Sammy Hagar but he went and joined Van Halen. Lived in Costa Mesa, then Huntington Beach across from the pier above Jack's Surfboard Shop. Got Married, lived in Corona, Garden Grove, then Salt Lake City for three years, then Near Kansas City, MO for 7 years, got divorced, now Birmingham for three, and moving to Nashville next month. Travel log apology.
