It's true that a sour economy weakens the arts. But it can't kill 'em.
Musicians dedicated to their craft will continue to write, perform and record songs regardless of what's happening — or not happening — in the marketplace.
"The Midnight Oil EP" Shane Cooley. A student at the College of William and Mary, Cooley is a gushing fountain of poppy rock music. Some of his recordings have been elaborate, expensive studio productions. Here, he's goes in a different direction.
The four solo acoustic songs on "The Midnight Oil EP" finds him in a more quiet, contemplative mood. It features just his voice, an acoustic guitar and a bit of Bob Dylan-like harmonica. "All songs were inspired by nightly walks in Williamsburg," Cooley writes in notes for the disc. "There has always been one sure key to a successful, life-long career in making music: keep it simple." Cooley was talking about the recording, but he could have been describing his own singing.
He's pared down his sometimes-warbling style and now delivers his lyrics in a more straightforward, clear fashion. In other words, he's gotten better.
If his songwriting doesn't always reach the standard of artists like Ryan Adams — whom Cooley's music often resembles — at least he's moving in the right direction.
" 'Cause I'm stronger now than I ever have been, I take vitamins and eat my daily bread," he sings on the track "Bed of Worries." "If you won't lie down in my bed of worries, stand up and walk with me instead."
Shane Cooley: The Midnight Oil EP
Review by Jennifer Bradshaw, Metromix Jersey Shore
Cooley combines melodic indie rock with lazy country undertones, melded together with patchy production quality that gives this EP a sweet, homegrown sound. Cooley claims that the album was inspired by “Nightly walks in Williamsburg, Virginia.” I don’t know if I get lonely walks, but I do get a sense of the small things in life, and the joy of playing music for its own sake. If I was in a bar and Cooley was playing, I’d sit back and listen and probably enjoy myself. If he was playing on the radio, I’d probably leave the station on. And if he releases a full length album, hopefully, it captures the simplicity of this short EP.
Shane Cooley is a performing/recording singer-songwriter full-time, all the time. He is also a part-time booking agent and producer, a student at the College of William and Mary, and a substitute teacher.
"Shane Cooley has a positive outlook and drive that will take him where he wants to go," said songwriter/producer Steve Bassett. That pretty much sums up Shane's quest to make a difference with his music since he was 13 years old, hundreds of songs ago. Shane's dedication has produced 6 self recorded and 5 studio albums that have caught the attention of radio, TV, internet, press and a growing fanbase, making him a compelling and distinctive artist.
Shane improves his craft with every song. He has learned how to succeed while still exhibiting enthusiasm, class and integrity, learning how to get along with all types in all sorts of environments, presenting himself in a confident, but not cocky way.
Shane Cooley is a unique, emerging artist that is hard to pigeon hole, with comparisons to Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Adams, Neil Young, and James Taylor. He has shared the stage with headliners such as Bruce Hornsby, Carbon Leaf, Parachute and Lucinda Williams. Shane extensively tours, while a student at the College of William & Mary, as his dedication accellerates him along the road to success.
