Influences
all my friends, family, the musical sons of riviera, you know....hammy,justin, meels, deepwater, sacred haze, sullivan, mckendry...the idea of duke kahanamoku, hindu philosophy, thomas merton, neil young, the legendary shaper/boozer cole simler, joni mitchell, chet baker, daniel lanois, raymond carver, emerson's essay's, van gogh, gaugin, bob zimmerman lyrics, jim jarmusch films....i try and pay attention and assimilate what i like, what i think is valuable to an artistic life.
Sounds Like
a musical version of a guy who thinks the world is too small and wants to either go back in time or go forward, out into space.
If I have to use labels for you to know me then I'd define myself as a surfboard shaper, painter, and songwriter. After traveling the world as a "minor league" pro surfer, I studied English Literature at Cal Poly in the 1990’s. Since that chapter, I've been chasing my artistic endeavors with both a serious work ethic and a sense of humor....and I'm still doing it after all this time.----------------- SURFBOARDS-- I have surfed since I was eight years old. Twenty seven years later I am still at it and have a small business shaping boards for friends and professional clientele in the San Luis Obispo area of California. The surfboards can be found in the water at most of the local beaches or in stock at premiere surf shops like Wavelengths in Morro Bay. My website also has a lot of info and video clips etc----WWW.SHANESTONEMAN.COM. ----PAINTING----I get out the oil paints when my surfboard business gets slow or if I just need to change up my routine. I end up spending many hours in a painting without ever really feeling like any time went by. I like to paint landscapes, seascapes, and fantastic surf related paintings based on the Central Coast lifestyle. Some are painted plein air while others are studio inventions. .....MUSIC--I am a self recorder. I like to read books about acoustics and mix engineering and song arrangement. Doesn' mean I am good at it but I sure love it that I can build songs out of guitars and words that come to me. And, of course, it helps to have friends who are great musicians and like drinking beers and laughing a lot. My record Seasongs and Nightbirds is for sale at WWW.CDBABY.COM/SHANESTONEMAN ....and i am working on two new ones right now!

I am one of the few honored people who has had the opportunity to hear your song with Ella. I must say she is damn good at freestyling! I made Adam burn that song for me and have been listening to it at least twice a day and am still blown away by it. I absolutely LOVE it. She is brilliant. Hope you are well. :)
Come up to the Toro Creek Ranch on Saturday June 6th, around 5:30pm, to help me celebrate my graduation from grad school! We will start at the Morro Bay Music Festival, which is earlier on in the day (~1pm), then head back up to the Ranch for BBQ, good beer and vino, music, fire, games, and fun! Everyone is welcome and encouraged to camp out and stay the night ; ) You and Meals should play some music for us up here!! Hope you can make it!
We will be seeing you tomorrow at sweet springs! Always super stoked when I see that you are playing there! Also would love to chat with you about a new board sometime soon :)
shane, thanks for the friendship. I don't know how you found me, but I really appreciate that you "get" my music. I just listened to your tunes, and I like your voice a lot. I'm away from the titles now, but the "moon" tune (instrumental) with the bossa groove was my favorite until I heard the "breeze" thing--great stuff!
And your artwork is wonderful!
Hey, if you want to hear a bit of my pickin' and grinnin', check out my "friend," vargobrien. That's a collaboration I've got going with my friend Chis Vargo.
Thanks, man, you've got me California dreamin'! Steve
