Shanghai 5 evokes the cinematic, the vaudevillian, the soulful, the ridiculous, and the decadent.
Listeners may detect echoes of everyone from Kurt Weill to Roxy Music, Ennio Morricone to Marvin Gaye, Blondie to David Bowie, but the band's territory is uniquely carved out as its own.
They often create their own events with unique acts including; one-man bands, comedy, beatboxing string quartets, chidrens choirs, slideshow players, funkster rebels, theatrical drama, and film. Or might enjoy a late night 60's french pop set, backed up by a several dry martinis.
Variety, curiosity, and a sense of adventure rule the group, landing them in the some bizarre situations; playing divebars one night, and the Flamingo Hotel the next. Shanghai 5 made it to 39 on the CMJ college charts last year, and have shared the stage with media activists, as well as raising money for HIV awareness with Erykah Badu. Shanghai 5 was recently featured on PBS 'Roadtrip Nation' as they interviewed people on the fringe of music, writing, art, and activism.
