In August of 2007, guitarist and songwriter Andrew Sgro left his job as a high school English teacher in suburban Boston, moved out of his apartment, and united with Dave Trombley (bass) and Tim Carleton (drums) to form Shanghai Thrills. After completing their debut EP Goodbye Guilt, Hello Lies in January of 2008, they welcomed lead guitarist Ross Gruet, formerly of EPIC act Automatic Loveletter, and departed on a second national tour.
Shanghai Thrills draws on the best of modern rock trends without sounding derivative or recycled, blending grunge rock, classic metal, and modern indie rock. Intense and energetic, their live show draws comparisons to Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, and Spoon and has earned Shanghai Thrills performances at the 2007 Warped Tour, the Virgin Mega-Store in Orlando, and the 2008 SXSW Festival.
In late 2007, they connected with producer Scott Riebling (Fallout Boy/Gym Class Heroes/Cobra Starship/The Academy Is/We The Kings) and quickly tracked their dynamic and seething debut record in a small house in Maine.
Shanghai Thrills has booked two national tours, including performances at the Viper Room in L.A., Reggie's Rock Bar in Chicago, The Gothic Theater in Colorado, Studio A in Miami, and Seattle's Showbox. The band aggressively seeks new opportunities and audiences, booking countless gigs at rock clubs and dive bars and tirelessly promotes themselves through college shows, in-stores, and radio appearances. Currently, Shangahi Thrills are booking shows, shooting music and documentary videos, and preparing for a live record and touring.
