We live in Portland, Oregon and this is what we do when we're bored. Gavin has been playing trumpet for Pink Martini and finds he needs to get this out of his system. Mel has been supporting the gazillion-selling Quarterflash, with whom she plays saxophones, keyboards and sings back-ups. She slides into the Woolies' lead vocal position with a flourish. She also wrote the ballad, “Till My Baby Comes Back Home.” We are a collective of performers using Gavin's formula to rage supreme. With his sweet trumpet tones, his brother Clark’s schizophrenic saxophone, Tom Hill's soulful trombone musings, and the nimble and versatile classically-trained rock guitarists Tom Sandahl and Tyson Schmidling, we are nature's own freak. Coming soon to a bar mitzvah near you.
We play the “hot music” of long ago: the jazz of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Paul Whiteman, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Raymond Scott, etc. It’s unbelievably quaint and tasty. And it rocks. This is the closest thing your grandparents will hear to what they heard when they were little. The only difference is that it has been adjusted for inflation; it’s in the currency of today. That’s because we are willing to do whatever it takes to recall this music’s virile imagination and rebellion. Yes, that’s right: this music courses and pulsates through our veins like the bulls in the streets of España. We are on a holy quest to find the true and lauded experience of way-back. We believe that experience was not so different from now. Your grandparents will like this, and so will you. And so will your kids. Generations unite!
Come out and just enjoy the show, or jump in and participate (liquid courage available at the bar!). Do you or your friends have something to share with us?
We love, love, LOVE your sound! Saw your last show at Jimmy Mak's and you guys are TERRIFIC! We are definitely planning on coming to Tony Starlight's to see you later this month.
