Always: Shannon Kealey--songs, vocals, guitar. Sometimes: James Kopcsay--guitar and vocals.
Influences
Heartbreak and disillusionment, and a good dose of humor. Trips to the shrink. Being a librarian and having access to all sorts of amazing information. Literature. A brief foray into religion. Stories my friends tell me. California's Bay Area and New York City. Western New York. Music, of course.
For nerdy folks like myself, the specific article that inspired me to write Centralia is "Fire in the Hole" by Kevin Krajick, and is available online: click here
Another great Centralia resource is available at
Offroaders.com. The Offroaders folks kindly added Centralia to their Multimedia page. Thanks, Ralph!
My songs are short stories set to a meld of folk, bluegrass, rock and pop music. I've taken a break from gigging for about a year, but I just booked a gig for January 16th, 2010 at 169 Bar and hope you can make it!
"What have you been doing for the last year?" you might ask. Well, in addition to staying committed to my day job (librarian), I decided to get back into acting. I took classes in Practical Aesthetics at Atlantic Acting School, and am currently studying the Meisner technique at Alan Gordon Studio in Greenwich Village, NYC. As an actor, I combine the fiery idealism of a Norma Rae era Sally Field with a smidgen of slapstick self-deprecation. To follow my budding acting career, become my fan on Facebook!
Another exciting thing happening is that I'm starting a freelance research consulting business for actors/writers/directors. Please contact me for more information. My credentials include 5 years of professional research experience at academic and health sciences libraries. I'm also a contributing author for Broadway: An Encyclopedia of Theater and American Culture (publication expected Dec 2009), and a dedicated cultivator of curiosity for my students at Pace University and New York University.
Here are some pics from a couple different performances at 169 Bar in Chinatown:
oh my, yes i have been there many times and its a pretty cool place to visit. I think most of the fire has moved out of Centralia now but still the history there is rich and worth the trip. Go to my page and ck out my albums, have 2 of Centralia on there ! ttyl, M
I've just listen to your great Song "Centralia" after watching a report on German TV and searching the web about that tragedy in Pennsylvania. A very touching Song ... good work done! :-)
Hey there, I have been going through some pics from the theatre days and thought of you - just wanted to see how things were going - drop me a line sometime.
Hey NYC'ers.
I know. You're making music too. I can appreciate this. But in the event that you need inspiration, allow me to invite you.
This is the first real show i've done in the city since the Imogen Heap tour, and who knows when I'll be back?! That said, this is your (generic. and i apologize in advance for that fact.) reminder:
Friday Night. Dec 14th.
(that's today, technically)
8:00pm
Googie's Lounge (upstairs @ The Living Room)
FREE. (1 drink minimum)
I promise to not be terrible. Nay, I promise to even be pretty good. And if I let you down, I promise to make it up to you.
(No, i haven't decided how yet, but I'm thinking something along the lines of awkwardly long hugs, chocolate milk, or having your back in an argument someday.)

Alice and the rest of the boys on the Group W Bench are thankful for Shannon Librarians Rawk Kealey. Mmmm. Remembering a good meal one year ago. Smiles.
dang it! i'm up against Aimee Mann? well if anything falls through, at least now you have a backup plan. and it's (almost) free (1 drink min.)! i'll certainly be back, one way or another :) glad you enjoyed the tunes (and nice harmonies on "well")
