Shannon Lyon to release El Sol through Continental Records (formerly known as Rounder Europe) in Europe in May 2008 and through Busted Flat Records in North America also in May 2008.
After several years of splitting his time between Canada and Europe, Kitchener, Ontario-born singer/songwriter Shannon Lyon's recent relocation to Berlin – ironically, Kitchener's original name – has led to a deal with Rounder Records' European division for his latest album, El Sol, set for release in late April, 2008.
Recorded before he left Canada, Lyon's tenth solo album is an intimate acoustic affair, featuring sparse backing from co-producer/keyboardist Chris Giesbrecht, and guest vocals from Busted Flat recording artist Sarah Hallman. Aside from the Mark Lanegan-penned title track, and Paul Kelly's "Same Old Walk," the remaining nine tracks are a glowing representation of Lyon's trademark honesty, which has drawn comparisons to Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt. As well, songs like "Back In Town," "Get Over You," and "Telephone" are an often-bittersweet reflection of his time spent in other parts of the world, including Australia and Amsterdam, over the last three years.
As one of Canada's most respected roots music artists, Shannon Lyon has performed internationally with Lucinda Williams, Son Volt's Jay Farrar, Richard Buckner, Blue Rodeo, Ray Lamontagne, Oh Susanna, and many others. In 2003 he became the first Canadian artist to sign with V2 Records for the acclaimed album Wandered, and his most recent release, 2006's Safe Inside (released on indie roots label Busted Flat) was called "another triumph in the career of one of Canada's most underrated songwriters" by Exclaim! Magazine.
Lyon's move to Rounder Europe with El Sol marks yet another stage in that career, and one that is sure to expand his audience all around the world.
