Several local people I've met in the last 3 years who've made impressive achievements despite great obstacles - I won't embarrass them by identifying them but each one left me in awe of their strength.

About me: I live in the suburbs of Wollongong. In 2004 I was elected to the Australian Parliament as the Labor Member for Cunningham and I was re-elected at the election on 24 November 2007. The Cunningham electorate is in the Illawarra region of NSW, stretching from Wollongong to Helensburgh.
I am a former High School and TAFE teacher as well as a senior project officer with the NSW Department of Juvenile Justice. I also worked at Wollongong TAFE for six years teaching local students and continue to take an active interest in education and youth issues in the Parliament.
My family has lived in the Illawarra for four generations. I have two great sons, Mike is 25 and Chris who is 20.
