Sharon Hazel’s music is influenced by many genres, no doubt stemming from the many places she has called home. The California native was raised in the Bay Area, where regular trips to San Francisco, Berkley, and Oakland started at a young age. Artists that had impacted the Bay Area music scene, from Janice Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to Too Short, also impacted Sharon. She was influenced at home by her parents’ extensive record collection of R & B and Soul artists such as Heatwave and Earth Wind & Fire. Ultimately, it was bands like Van Halen and Guns N’ Roses that made her beg her parents for a guitar at age 11. Her first gig was at age 13 as a rhythm guitarist in a cover band.
During High School, her family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Sharon was influence by two new genres of music: Jazz and Southern Rock. It’s no surprise that Jazz was all over the radio in Kansas City, with its intergral part in American music history. “My mom always had jazz on the radio in high school,” says Hazel. When Sharon got a license and began driving, she would flip the dial to classic rock stations. There she discovered Southern Rock artists such as CCR, The Eagles, Steve Miller and The Black Crowes.
Hazel’s next home was Chicago where she attended DePaul University. Chicago, yet another musically rich part of America, is where she was exposed to two more genres: The Blues and something she had never heard before, Acid Jazz. A mixture of Funk and Jazz, Sharon quickly become a fan of Acid Jazz bands such as The Brand New Heavies, Sumo, and Bumpus. She also discovered songwriting in Chicago. “I know it sounds weird,” says Hazel, “but I never really listened to lyrics until I got to Chicago. My freshman year of college I met so many different people and listened to so many different artists.” At this time, she was introduced to a spectrum of great lyrical artists ranging from Dave Matthews Band and Ani DiFranco to Radiohead and A Tribe Called Quest. Sharon performed in bands around Chicago as a guitarist while writing her own songs privately. She finally took the plunge and starting performing her original music at open mics around Chicago and hasn’t looked back since.
Today San Diego is home. She was featured on television’s Indie Music Show as well as on MySpace’s ‘Top Artist’ page as one of Southern California’s top Folk Rock artists. She made news in Performer Magazine highlighting her signing to San Diego’s Crumb Records. 2009 introduces Sharon’s band, Sharon Hazel Township. The acoustic folk /jazz group has open for the likes of Rhythm & The Method, Tori Roze and Angie Evans. Sharon Hazel continues to tour the country playing music inspired by the many places she has been and the unique life she has lived.
