SHARON KING; PRESS RELEASE, 2009
Following rave reviews for her two albums 24 Hours (1999) and Quiddity (2002), Edinburgh-based singer/songwriter Sharon King took an unconventional career path and has spent the last few years ‘getting tangled up in English literature’ at Edinburgh University.
This was time very well spent, as her third album Reckless Angels marks Sharon’s return to the world of music with a keenly developed lyricism and wordplay that places her at the top of her game. Reckless Angels has a spacious feel, echoing the wide open spaces of Texan blues, while being firmly planted in the culture of modern Scottish music. It has a countryesque vibe, but is definitely not country music. Reckless Angels also sees her second album collaboration with the Nevernever Cowboys, an umbrella term for the myriad of talented musicians that accompany Sharon on her journey.
“I am over the moon to be singing and writing again. This is what I do and I’m a bit lost without song writing and performing. My favourite track from the album is ‘Lady Tuesday’ and it kind of sums this up perfectly. I am 100% delighted with Reckless Angels and feel it’s heads above my previous albums.”
A spinner of confessional tales and a troubadour in the truest sense, King excels as a live performer. Supported by her hypnotic, rock steady acoustic guitar, her endearingly candid dry humour creates a relaxed intimacy with the crowd.
As with her previous albums, Reckless Angels boasts a wealth of musical talent courtesy of the likes of Vera van Heeringen (New Rope String Band – fiddle, mandolin and backing vocals); Inge Thomson (Karine Polwart Band, Harem Scarem – accordion) Kaela Rowan (Bevvy Sisters – backing vocals) and James Macintosh (Shooglenifty – drums) while cello, bass and piano add atmosphere and flavour to the mix of hook-laden songs.
The launch of Reckless Angels will be followed by Sharon hitting the road, taking her everywhere from the Scottish Highlands to the heart of Wales. Accompanying her will be Nevernever Cowboys Vera van Heeringen on guitar, fiddle, mandolin and backing vocals and Isabel Lohss on accordion and backing vocals. 2010 will see Sharon playing solo dates and also touring extensively with The Nevernever Cowboys.

On a more personal note...I'm really delighted with the new album RECKLESS ANGELS. Some of the completed tracks are on the site. The Nevernever Cowboys have played a blinder and I think the album will do very well. I am looking forward to getting some reviews back. I'm a reckoning that Reefe/Shitter/Trowsers or whoever I am on the 24th should make the Twa Tams to see whit yer all aboot. If ye could see fit to acknowledge my effort with a minimalistic Kraftwerky version of Mendelssohn's 'Scottische' I'd appreciate it no end.
