Originally uniting in 2002, York natives Shattered Beneath the Shade
have been developing sonically since high school. Fronted by Tara Seaks
(pillbelly) and supported by Ryan Smith (Bass) Caleb Banas (lead guitar, pillbelly and Lux Bridge) and Max Melton (Drums, formerly of Ninetail), Shattered Beneath the Shade finds a way to infuse hardcore music with ambient melodies, shifting in and out of progressive rock, alternative, and emotional hardcore genres.
Banas' weeping guitar parts browse stacks of effects that weep and drip through the airy parts of songs, then slam back to join Smith's
charging bass lines with punctual distortion.
Seaks, who toggles between a singing voice that laces a modern female strength/desperation dilemma with an eastern chant-like tonal progression, and screaming influenced by hardcore punk and screamo, achieves an unresolving paradox of daring and darling, cute yet terrifying.
The entire symphonic circus ordeal is illustriously attacked by Melton’s kit, as he pelts his band mates with semi-automatic rhythms that promise to work in union with Seaks' throat. A union that works by slapping the guitars around a little to keep them from crying too much.
