As the holiday nears, here is a relevant repost on What valentines day is really about.
.
I am a fairly romantic guy, someone who takes it upon himself to write notes and offer romantic surprises fairly often. So, two weeks before Valentine's Day ( a few years ago), I discussed with my girlfriend how the holiday was such a commercial rip-off and that I was not going to succumb to it. She seemed OK with it and acted like she totally understood. She even talked about how romantic she thought I was. But, when Valentine's Day came around and I did not buy her flowers, she was definitely disappointed…even though she said she wasn't.
.
A gift on Valentine's Day is very important…but for different reasons than you may think. Rationally, my girlfriend understood the logic of my stance concerning Valentine's Day, but emotionally, well, that is another thing all together. If you really want to be logical about it you need to consider all the issues:
The reality is, most everyone in America acknowledges the holiday and millions of dollars are spent to remind us to think about and evaluate our relationship. I did not consider what my girlfriend was going through on Valentine's Day. She will probably be thinking about your relationship more than usual and, without question, it will be a topic of discussion amongst her friends and co-workers. When she goes to work or meets her friends in the following days, they are going to ask her what the two of you did for Valentine's Day. She could say, "Oh, Shawn doesn't believe in Valentine's Day…he thinks it's a commercial rip-off". But she would rather say, "Shawn sent me my favorite flowers and cooked me dinner" You have to remember that valentines is a cultural holiday in America and when you give her a gift, you are not only showing your affection but arming her with an affirmation she will share with the people around her. In general. You are not giving a gift, you are giving a story to share.
Gift Tip: to a woman, having flowers sent to her is thoughtful, for a man, sending flowers is a way of being thoughtful without putting any thought into it, like foreign aid. Many smart women are onto this, so do something else to show some effort. Remember though, If you have to say it with flowers, a single flowers says, "I'm cheap"

10 of 20MoreMake her a card- make it an excuse to play dress up and buy her something kiky-something just dont pull that cop out excuse and think its ok. Besides, if she is faking those orgasms, your lucky she hasnt dumped you
All your blogs I hadnt read til now-
I have nothing nice to say
U r a real deep-thinker!
Hmmmm? Well I guess I think that sending a single flower is best because u didn't blow an ass of money on something that will just die soon enough anyhow. U may as well just hand me a hundred bucks and a single flower or I've always been fond of a fella just picking me a flower versus buying one! Homemade cards are the best though. No matter how old u r! Just call me fucking Martha because I think getting crafty is hotttttt!!!!!!!
Don't follow the commercial holiday, why not instead make Valentines day very special for the both of you, show her you will be out of the ordinary, spontaneous, yet with the spirit of the cultural holiday...
Go out and do something incredibly romantic, The more material involved the less passion is involved, the more passion, the more romance the less she cares what you give her... i think... dont buy her flowers, pick her flowers, nice ones, :D rare ones...
dont buy her a card, put together a scrap book or card and writeo n it yourself...
Craziness...Peonies are my favorite too! They're actually all over the place here in Nebraska if you catch the right season. I think every woman wants flowers on Valentines even if she says she doesn't. So make sure you buy your woman flowers and then do some thing else special that makes her day different from the rest of ours...
Remember though, If you have to say it with flowers, a single flowers says, "I'm cheap"

You phrased it in a wonderful way. But it is so true.
Okay, I googled Peonies because I wanted to find out the history of the flower and then I clicked on your pic and read your blog. You sounded so interesting that I looked at your page and then found you even more interesting.... What a fun adventure I had, thanks! But I wonder, who are you strange man? You can look me up just search for Tessa Garver :) Anyway, I am going to go back to looking up Peonies. Have a great day
i got me some roses for valentines day. they were fabulous because i wasn't expecting anything at all except maybe a card.
I think there are plenty of things a guy could do without actually buying a gift and 'buying' into the commercialism of the day. If my ex husband had of said 'you are not to do a thing around the house today, Im doing it all and Im going to massage you to near death at the end of it!' it would have blown me away and probably been a much more memorable gift than half wiltered flowers and an half amusing $5 card........(Feb is summer in Australia, thus the flower problem)
