At the tender age of five Shawn was introduced to the sublime sounds of country and western music while riding with his dad in his Ford pickup. "I can remember wondering why Marty Robbins was always singing about getting shot along the Rio Grande or being mistreated by a Mexican beauty. What kind of life produced that level of song writing? I learned early that real music invites the listener into different places-- adventure, mystery, suffering, enlightenment, and even spiritual renewal. Good songs come from genuine stories and personal experiences that touch the spirit. So Mr. Robbins must have lived an exciting life along the Texas and Mexican border."
As the young Shawn grew up he heard a plethora of other great music in school and church-- gospel, southern blues, classic rock, and dixieland jazz.
"My dad is a singing pentecostal preacher. He has to sing a song before he preaches. I grew up singing and harmonizing with him on songs like 'Where Could I Go' and 'The Love Of God'. He instilled in me a deep admiration for gospel songs and timeless hymns."
Being exposed to this rich heritage of Southern music, Shawn began to develop his own sound. After he turned sixteen, an elderly honky tonk musician showed Shawn how to play piano. "I can teach you in five minutes," said the old harmonica wailer. In the months to follow the old musician would attend Shawn's church and play harmonica while Shawn pounded out crude chords. "The Unclouded Day" was a favorite. In time Shawn was playing more and more and learning to write songs.
He currently leads worship at the Bridge Christian Fellowship (formerly Cahaba) at the Advocate Center in Irondale, AL. He strives for worship music that blends revelation and innovation. He believes anointed music is a vehicle to lift us into a place of intimacy and fellowship with the Father-- where our spirits are in collision and He refreshes our souls.
In 2004 Shawn married Allison Jent. In 2007 they had their son Cash. They live happily ever after near Birmingham, AL.
