Interests

  • General

So many to name. I love Creative Writing (fiction, poetry, drama, inspirational, etc.), running, hiking, camping, traveling, museums & art, movies, movies, and more movies, music (gospel, conscious hip hop, R&B, reggae, etc.), and lots more. I love the game of chess and I play it often. I believe it makes me a better decision maker and it teaches about the consequences of making good and bad moves (choices) in life. I also love cooking. I can cook, bake and BBQ practically anything. I love Caribbean, Creole/Cajun dishes. Perhaps, the right person can give me some more interests to add to my life because I love to learn as much as I love to teach. I'm also a high school English Language Arts teacher so I love changing the lives of my students for the better! Writing is a passion of mine and I hope to be among the literary greats one day. "Greatness" is my calling! I also love the great outdoors. California is such a wonderful place, because it has so much to offer in regards of traveling and adventure. Try visiting Yosemite in May/June or any of our great National Parks. I feel as comfortable sleeping under the stars in the wilderness of the Sierra Nevadas as I do in the city. I also love water!
  • Music

I have a varied taste in music, but gospel music is my favorite, because it changes the soul. Some of my favorites are Karen Clark Sheard, the Clark Sisters, Kirk Franklin, Deitrick Haddon, Erykah Badu, Esperanza Spalding, Goapele, Jonathan Butler, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Sade, Amel Larrieux, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Keyshia Cole, Gospel Hip Hop like: The Cross Movement, GRITS, KRS-One, and more. I also love Out of Eden, Jaci Velasquez, John Coltrane, Rose Royce, DeBarge, and so much more. I can get pumped by listening to Mos Def and enlightened Hip Hop by the likes of Talib Kweli, The Roots, Common, Arrested Development, etc. or just chill listening to the wonderful sounds of Nora Jones or Lizz Wright. Reggae is also a favorite, and anyone with the last name Marley is cool with me! My all-time favorite jazz album is "A Love Supreme" by John Coltrane. It's basically an opus unto God!
  • Movies

I love movies. "The Passion of the Christ" has to be honored for its sheer glory. I also love "Eve's Bayou" (I cherish this film), "The Great Debaters" (truly inspiring), "Nothing But A Man" (a powerful story of love), "The Princess and the Frog", "One Night With The King", "The Gospel", "Down in the Delta", "Glory", "The Hurt Locker", "Do the Right Thing", "Akeelah and the Bee", "Our Song", "The Color Purple", "One Heart Broken Into Song", "Black Orpheus", "Love Jones", "SLAM", "AVATAR", "Bright Star", "Rocket Science", "Fireproof", "Sin Nombre", "Slumdog Millionaire", "Shakespeare In Love", "Fresh", "Malcolm X", "Finding Forrester", "Hoop Dreams", "Baby Boy", "Whale Rider", "Signs", "Batman Begins", "Hav Plenty", "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "28 Days Later" (best horror film ever), "Hustle & Flow", "Rize", "Chariots of Fire", "Without Limits", "Endurance", "Spirited Away", "Princess Mononoke", "Ponyo", "GATTACA", almost anything John Singleton and Spike Lee wrote/directed, "Daughters of the Dust", "Ghost World", "Smoke Signals", "Dream Keeper", and so much more. Just visit my website SHAZZAR.COM to learn about some of my favorites in films!
  • Television

The Wire (on HBO), Lincoln Heights (on ABC Family), The Boondocks, 24, Lost, and The Simpsons, The Wonder Years (a classic I grew up on), The X-Files, interesting PBS, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel and History Channel shows (I love to be edutained), and sports . I also enjoy watching Pastor Joel Osteen, because he is so inspirational!
  • Books

The Holy Bible, and so many other books. I love to read and some of my favorite authors are Langston Hughes, my main literary role model, Maya Angelou, my inspiration, James Weldon Johnson, a great man who composed a brilliant career, Sonia Sanchez, she reminds me most of my poetic-self, Alice Walker, is a kindred writer unto me, Nikki Giovanni, a true poetic soul, Yusef Komunyakaa, a prolific prized poet, Gordon Parks, a true renaissance man like myself, Mildred Taylor, she gave me the hunger to create and the desire to teach through my writing, J. California Cooper, a master of the short story, Zora Neale Hurston, a master of poetic fiction, Toni Morrison, winner of the "Nobel Prize in Literature", need I say more?, Richard Wright, truly a great Black writer, powerful Paul Laurence Dunbar, a pioneer of poetry, deft Dorothy West, the youngest writer of the Harlem Renaissance, a great period in our history, Young Adult writer Walter Dean Myers, we share the same creative inspiration to write and express our literary voice, Virginia Hamilton, my first inspiration and the first writer I ever met, Edwidge Danticat, a future great writer, and Octavia Butler, the Queen of Science Fiction! I also admire the great Mark Twain, he was a charismatic writer and a complex character of life! Pastor Max Lucado is my favorite inspirational writer. His teaching ministry through his books have helped change my life for the better. The last book that got me real "emotional" by the ending was "The Secret Life of Bees" (the movie doesn't compare to the novel)!
  • Heroes

There are few who inspire me and I call them my mentors: JESUS CHRIST, my Lord, Savior & Redeemer! Belteshazzar (the prophet Daniel), a great man of faith and my namesake! My Parents, without them where would I be? Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a great man of purpose and vision. The great Langston Hughes is the definition of a writer! Dr. Maya Angelou is truly magnificent! James Weldon Johnson taught us to "Lift Every Voice and Sing"! President Barack Obama, a man of change and hope, Kevin Johnson, a great basketball player who gave me my first scholarship and someone who keeps Hope alive! Pastor Max Lucado is a true man of God. The Reverend Jackie McCullough is an anointed woman of God. Gordon Parks, proves there are no boundaries to creativity, W.E.B. Du Bois, a great man of intellectual vision. Frederick Douglass, a true freedom fighter. Malcolm X, a powerful voice of evolution of one's self and people. Dr. Cornel West, a true intellectual innovator. Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds taught me about chivalry! James Earl Jones is a man who proves that greatness can be achieved no matter what one's beginnings are. Eric Liddell, a Christian runner who truly ran the race! Wilma Rudolph encouraged me to achieve by overcoming her obstacles in life. I am my own hero, because I believe God has great things destined in my life, and I'll be an inspiration for many! When you believe in Jesus Christ first and then believe in yourself, anything is possible no matter the obstacle! Philippians 4:13

About me:

My name is SHAZZAR, and I'm a very interesting person to know. I love life and I love living a spiritual and meaningful existence. I consider Jesus Christ as my best friend! I am a very unique individual who will be appreciated by those who value "quality" over "quantity." Feel free to enter my world by clicking on my name, which will take you to my personal website! It's just a small way I share spirituality and culture with the world! I'm African-American and part Native American. I'm also a very spiritual (non-religious) non-denominational Christian. It's amazing at how positive and meaningful life is when you strive to do WWJD?

In my spare time you'll find me reading an enlightening book, listening to good music, viewing a film, running a ten miler for fun, kayaking on the ocean, lake or river, cooking exotic foods, at a museum, hiking/camping in the wilderness of a national park, or simply relaxing at home thinking of new ideas for my writing career. Two things I've loved since I was a kid are running and writing. I'm very educated so it's natural that I'm a teacher. I love having the opportunity to change the lives of young people for the better, because my high school English/Creative Writing teacher helped change my life.

On the road of my life God is my steering wheel that guides me in the right direction, and never my spare tire, which I only turn to in time of despair!

God is Love!

When I workout I run a lot, so you can check out my Nike Plus system that I use with my Nike shoes and iPhone or Nike+ SportBand or iPod nano. The workout data are my runs while listening to my favorite tunes! I love to run two to ten miles each day!...... ........

Who I'd like to meet:

Jesus Christ first and foremost when the trouble of this world is over! Belteshazzar (the Prophet Daniel), a great man of faith and my namesake! My ancestors who died before I was born whom I am descended from. Also, I'm always interested in meeting those who believe in God. Otherwise, on My Space it'll be cool to communicate with fellow writers, runners, educators or people who are into the same things I'm into (or might think I'll be interested in something they're into that I'm not). You'll be amazed at how much we can learn from each other in this life through our experiences. It's all about being reciprocal (giving and receiving)! I'm the romantic type who believes in chivalry (click on word to read my poem of the same title)! I grew up listening to Babyface the singer who is one of the truest romantics. I'm single but also believe in becoming friends first, because it builds a solid foundation. If you value quality over quantity then you'll truly value me! I do admit I have a crush on Esperanza Spalding because she's simply sublime!

K&K Mime - God Is Here by Karen Clark-Sheard
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHUwZXnjAtc

God is Here in our my minds, hearts and souls when we allow our bodies to be temples of the Holy Spirt. I have church every day no matter where I am, because Jesus Christ lives in me! I do not have to wait until Sunday or midweek Bible Study to be in the presence of God. Do not be a Christian only on Sunday mornings, but be a Christian (having Jesus Christ live within you) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 52 weeks a year! I can be on the highest mountain or in the lowest valley, I know I'm never alone, because God is Here (with me)!

God is Love!!!
