In the late seventies and early eighties, South Florida boasted one of the most explosive original rock scenes in the country. It was a time when Rock music was reinventing itself to appeal to a younger, more discriminating audience. New Wave, Punk and other experimental genres were finding a ready audience, and were changing the shape of Rock music forever. And yet, South Florida's prominence in the underground scene remains one of the area's best kept secrets. Bands that included Z-Cars, The Kids, Critical Mass, Charley Pickett, The Cichlids, Slyder, Tight Squeeze and others filled up dozens of local rock venues to the delight of fans. It was an incubator from which some of the biggest names in music and entertainment emerged. For the second annual Sheila Witkin Memorial Concert, these spectacular bands will reunite in honor of Sheila Witkin, a major figure in the evolution and success of South Florida's music scene.
Where do I begin about last weekend? Absolutely one of the best weekends I've ever had! Amazing bands, amazing music, a wonderful cause, great people, great vibe and I wouldn't have missed it for the world! Bring on next year! Haze x
Thanks for the add. Hope you do another Sheila Witkin Memorial Reunion Concert soon - I was so disappointed that I couldn't come to the one in August. Would have been an awesome birthday pressie. Alas, I couldn't come. Hoping to next time.
It's a great thing you are doing here. All the best,
RIP Jamine Miller At the turn of the 70s it was bands like Fantasy that put the South Florida Music scene on the map. Then a mere 16 or 17 year girl left her indelible mark on South Florida's music history. Sometime after the Fantasy chapter of her career I got to know and befriended Jamine Miller as we discussed embarking on a project together. She drifted away and we lost touch only to be saddened to hear of her whereabouts to surface just 2 days ago by learning of her passing. She made music history here in the South Florida scene and now I feel it forever diminished by this loss.
Hello. Would ANYONE know where I can find ANY mp3s of songs by The Kids(Time to Explain/Backstage Girl/Tell Me What You Want/Maybe Someday)??? Whether to buy, d/l, just listen to!!!! anyone? Please.
Thank you so much for the add! It was such an honor to be able to attend the concert Friday night. I had an incredible time!! Will definitely be there next year!!!
What an honor and privilege to be in the audience for both shows this weekend. A fabulous, fabulous event for such a worthwhile and notable cause! Congrats and thank you to all involved.
What an incredible weekend! You put on two terrific shows that won't soon be forgotten. Bruce - your mom would be so proud. Martin - it couldn't have happened without you, I am sure. It is amazing what a classy, kind, and talented group of people you assembled to put on this event. I can't wait for Sheila Witkin 3.
I don't usually get to Florida, but I do see that the shows went great. What a great thing you guys are doing here. I am proud to be a part of it, and if I can ever do anything to help,(such as promotions and such) I would be honored to do so. Thanks to Bruce, Joey, Beano & Johnny...I'm sure Ms. Witkin is looking down from where she is with that big smile on her face, very VERY proud of her boys. You guys done good! Thanks to all ~ Deb C.
