Sheldon Concert Hall & Art Galleries's Blurbs
About me:
HISTORIC HALL: The Sheldon was designed by noted St. Louis World’s Fair architect Louis Spiering and opened its doors in 1912 as the Ethical Society of St. Louis. Famous speakers such as Albert Einstein and Ernest Hemingway have spoken from its stage and the world’s greatest musicians, from Jose Carreras, Itzhak Perlman, Kiri te Kanawa and Jessye Norman to Dave Brubeck, Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis, Joan Baez and Willie Nelson, have performed in the intimate 702-seat hall.

PERFECT ACOUSTICS: The Sheldon Concert Hall is known around the world for its perfect acoustics and was voted one of the top ten concert halls in the country by touring musicians. Musicians often rank The Sheldon as their favorite concert hall.

A TRADITION OF GREAT MUSIC: The Sheldon presents great jazz, folk, classical and family subscription concerts, as well as gospel, blues, bluegrass, Celtic, Latin and other music from around the world. The Sheldon regularly presents well known artists in diverse musical genres and also showcases St. Louis musicians on its weekly Notes from Home series.

SERVICE TO THE ST. LOUIS REGION: The Sheldon hosts over 350 events each year and serves over 120,000 adults and children through a wide range of concerts, educational programs, art exhibits and community events in the Sheldon Concert Hall, Sheldon Art Galleries, Sheldon Ballroom, William T. Kemper Atrium and Louis Spiering Room. Collaborations with St. Louis Jazz Festival, St. Louis Art Fair, First Night and many other non-profit organizations and community outreach programs serve thousands more.

A COMMITMENT TO EDUCATION: In addition to a Family Concerts series, The Sheldon annually introduces over 20,000 young people to music through “he Jazz Story, Folk Music in the Melting Pot, Book of the Blues, The American Musical, Lewis and Clark and the classical Eroica Project Concert. Young artists are exhibited in the Gallery of Children’s Art in the Sheldon Art Galleries. Educational workshops and master classes connect talented young musicians with Sheldon guest artists, and college internships teach arts management, recording techniques and concert and gallery operations.

RECENT RENOVATIONS: The Sheldon became fully accessible in 1998 through the addition of two elevators, a street level entrance, new lobbies and accessible restrooms in the adjoining Emerson Center building. Also added were the Sheldon Art Galleries and the 500-seat Louis Spiering Room, as well as a new parking lot, rehearsal space, meeting rooms and a patrons’ lounge.

QUALITY VISUAL ARTS: In 1998, The Sheldon added the 7,000 square foot Sheldon Art Galleries and an outdoor sculpture garden. The galleries contain six separate spaces devoted to rotating exhibits of photography, architecture, St. Louis artists and collections, emerging artists, jazz history and children’s art. 75,000 people visited the galleries last year. The Sheldon presents gallery lectures for adults and visual art educational programs for young people.

"And Man created the plastic bag and the tin and aluminum can and the cellophane wrapper and the paper plate, and this was good because Man could then take his automobile and buy all his food in one place and He could save that which was good to eat in the refrigerator and throw away that which had no further use. And soon the earth was covered with plastic bags and aluminum cans and paper plates and disposable bottles and there was nowhere to sit down or walk, and Man shook his head and cried: "Look at this Godawful mess." ~Art Buchwald, 1970
