"Instincts are irrational, and we must follow where they lead" - emerging with similar motives, Shell Beach was founded by long-time friends in 2004. The line, taken from the band-name-inspiring movie "Dark City", coincidentally describes the circumstances around the formation of the band perfectly. With the members each having paid their dues in well-known and popular acts of the Budapest underground scene, the need to create a band that represents something new and something fresh arose mutually. "Most of us still had obligations in other musical endeavours, but we got pulled in the minute we started. There was nothing like when the five of us played together." - says vocalist Zoli Totik. The post-hardcore/alternative outfit grew fast the following years and focused on creating music they always had dreamed of writing. With the help of a demo and online presence the attention and interest surrounding the group quickly arose, enabling the band to tour the country and neighbouring regions.
Soon enough the material for the first full-length Shell Beach record was written. The title "Acronycal" - an astronomical term referring to planets that are opposite the sun, hence in a favourable position for observation - parallels perfectly with the notion that the record is indeed a perfect showcase for the various sides of Shell Beach. Ranging from the intense, hardcore-inspired waves of chaos, to the quiet, ambient, dreamlike passages, the music heard on "Acronycal" represents our daily struggles in life and our pursuit to find happiness. The 10 tracks show that the band takes pride in their musical influences by acknowledgeing their many inspirations like Glassjaw, the Deftones, Refused or He Is Legend to name just a few. Although the record aims at giving a sence of completion, this most possibly can only be achieved by experiencing Shell Beach in a live setting. "And this is the ultimate goal for our band, for us to be able to play our music for the most people we possibly can."
