WRITING with part instinct and part intuition, Shelley’s songs draw comparisons from Joni Mitchell to Madonna, Loreena McKennitt to Dan Fogelberg, The Eagles to Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow to Peter Gabriel. "Good groove. Cool imagery, theme," –Billboard; “The powerful combination musically and lyrically creates a sound that is truly unique and refreshing. Barratt’s music provides a breath of fresh air,” –GoGirls Music; "Shelley's music has merit overall but what makes her distinct is her songwriting… catchy rock-pop-folk tunes… blissful… rhythmic… curious,” –IMG Music; “I am enjoying the CD and hope to see more of your work on the market soon. All the best,” –Terry Brooks, Author; “You sing with your heart. Nothing under the heavens can stop that,” –Henderson Jones, Filmmaker.
The Shelley Barratt Band writes, records, and performs music from the heart that speaks globally. The singer-songwriter inspired tunes are melodic and poetic, unconventional, yet middle-of-the-road accessible, crossing genres with folk-rock, pop, AC, indie, acoustic, Americana, Jazz, Celtic and other international influences. Through driving rhythms and sophisticated guitar work, Shelley’s voice has a soothing effect as she offers intimacy and insight.
Besides signing her album, Origin of Flight, to Rescue Records for music licensing, Shelley’s songs have received acclaim in the Billboard World Song Contest, have been featured in Cinemasounds in theatres across the country, have been nominated for Fame Games Effigy Awards and ‘Reviewers Picks’, and more. Currently based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the band’s focus is on line-up, arrangement and production for release of new music on all fronts in 2009. Expect not only upcoming live shows and regional tours, but a new album, as well as a DVD with video, and more.
Shelley, a child of the southwest, sang lead with the regionally-known band, Sub Culture, and has collaborated with artists of all kinds, including recording artists signed to indie and major record labels. She performed solo at festivals, including Folk Alliance and Hyperactive, and at venues from Nashville to San Jose. She has hosted acoustic and women’s showcases, and created music for modern dance, special occasions and visual media. Shelley’s music has piqued the interest of dancers, authors and visionaries.
Bob, guitarist extraordinaire, has extensive background with engineering, production and playing electric, acoustic and synth guitars with numerous recording artists including Count Basie’s Orchestra members, The Next of Kin, Precognition, Calvary Chapel, and more. He owns Son Set Beach Productions, an established Pro Audio music production studio, including video and film.
Jimmy, on drums, has experience with classical and percussive music and performed with the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program including a performance highlight at Carnegie Hall. In addition to acclaim through collegiate Jazz and other school-related honors and bands, Jimmy studied under an NMSO percussionist. Jimmy LaPrelle also works with Bob as Son Set Beach Percussion.
Steve, a monster on bass guitar, played with very talented musicians, recorded records and toured all over. Steve has some of his work up on myspace: Bar 7 was a cool project - Jeff Keith and Tommy Skeoch from (Tesla) Denis and Steve from (Flame) and Ray Hinkley had a great time. Steve recorded with Singer/Songwriter Marshall Coleman, Fred Coury (Cinderella) on drums, and Frank Wilsey (Arcade Steven Percy Ratt) on guitar. Flame was together for eight years and played for a lot of people and had a great following in the bay area. Steve says: "I love the bass".
Guests on other random instruments all round out the sound for the Shelley Barratt Band.
