Bio
2010 WINNER OF THE PORT FAIRY FOLK FESTIVAL BEST NEW TALENT AWARD------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2010 WINNER OF THE PORT FAIRY FOLK FESTIVAL OPEN MIC COMPETITION----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLACE WINNER IN THE 2010 PADDY O'NIELL AWARD BAND ''SHANACHIE''-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Along with Allan Evans on Irish flute and Celtic Harp, Robert Hillman on Viola & Michaela Hickey on Piano Accordion & Bohdran)------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michelle Meehan or 'Shelle' is a guitarist, singer, .. songwriter and multi instrumentalist.. bringing to life her own musical recipe from a rich palette of .. Bluesy, Earthy, Jazzy FOLK------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Raised in a musical family.. it didn't take long for the young girl to grab her guitar, .. flute, violin & a few belongings.. & start touring this rugged country with her little dog in tow, ......................................................................... searching for rich experience in the 'school of life'.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michelle's repertoire of original songs grew gradually .. after years of colourful encounters with beautiful, crazy & scary people.......................................... love affairs worthy of a hollywood screenplay....................... adventures into nature,.. amazing rewards & hard life lessons.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michelle is currently settled in Melbourne studying a bachelor of music performance and interspersing this with gigs around Victoria and at festivals throughout the year.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nothing compares to the LIVE experience that Michelle creates.....--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michelle approaches all elements of her craft with integrity, ability, and a zest for exploration.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shell's great musical explorations take the audience on diverse journeys through calculated dynamics with delicate finger style guitar playing and soft sweet singing tempered by loud powerful outbursts of complex / rhythmic guitar and passionate vocals.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Audiences can expect to be transported to the eye of the storm that is Michelle's very soul.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As well as playing as a soloist, Michelle sings and plays guitar in her folk band Shanachie (Gaelic name for storyteller) which includes an ecclectic lineup of traditional folk instruments including the Irish wooden flute & Celtic harp played by Allan Evans, the Viola played by Robert Hillman and the Piano Accordion & Bohdran played by Michaela Hickey. Shanachie have played at all the major Australian folk festivals in 2010.----------------------------------------------------------------------- Michelle ALSO plays flute, violin and percussion .. in a trio called ''Chandra'' with her Mum Jill Meehan & her aunty Joy Lamprell ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- www.myspace.com/chandratrio ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michelle also plays flute in a band called .. Blue Couch with Greg Waddel and friends, .. playing a repertoire of Kev Carmody's songs.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- www.myspace.com/bluecouchmusic ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michelle is often seen on stage accompanying other musical acts using her flute, violin, voice and percussion instruments.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Michelle has played at many different venues, here are a few:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The comfortable chair, The Espy, Pure, Barbukka, Cape Live, The Bender Bar, The Old Bar, The Evelyn, Pure, Grumpys Green, The Newmarket Hotel (Bendigo), The Brunswick hotel, The Sustainable living festival (southbank) Noise bar (Brunswick)The Golden Vine (Bendigo) The Basement bar (Bendigo) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AND festivals such as Maldon Folk Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Geelong Waterfront Festival, Corryong traditional music and poetry festival, Nerrandera trad festival, Music Majik festival .......------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "This enigmatic performer will captivate and bedazzle you with her wistful vocal stylings and infectious melodies…" Reggie Bowman ~ Scream Louder Productions..------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A little bit of extra info from Michelle Meehan:---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My Mum Jill Meehan taught me how to play guitar and sing when I was four. In my teens I practiced guitar a lot and tried to find my own sound. Now in my twenties I play gigs most nights of the week, and during the day I study my music degree and also work in hospitality to support myself. My big goal is to develop a good name for myself and live a lifestyle of touring with my music, playing gigs all the time and also teaching music during the daytimes.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Some of my thoughts on a few issues:----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The light can conceal as much as it reveals...... .. I think contrast is a very important part of existence, 'good' wouldn't be able to be as 'good' as it is without having such a thing as 'bad' to be different from.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Art in our culture: .. A reason why art and music etc are so prevalent in our society could be: crazy arty creative people go to the extremes of living and whilst being extremely depressed or happy or tripped out, they create something tangible that OTHER people can experience in the form of music/art/dance. We like to experience a taste of these extremes, without actually living them.........................--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Violence: .. I think we condition our next generation to like violence, by taking them to violent movies, and whilst watching the movies, we give the kids reward types of food such as popcorn lollies icecream and junk. I feel so desensitised to violence which scares me... -
