"Beginning is always the hardest part. Not knowing what direction you’re going or with whom you’ll be traveling, false starts are inevitable. But when you figure those two little things out, there’s no looking back. Such is the case with Sherazada.
After enduring those few false starts, things finally got rolling in August of 2007. Formed by Stephen Nahorniak, Adam Biener, Jason Thalmann, Kyle Miller, and Glenn Petnel, the guys in Sherazada were united by a single goal -- create the type of quality music they grew up listening to.
Fueled by an appetite for sausages, destruction, and lots and lots of coffee, the band took the New Jersey scene by storm. They independently recorded and released their first EP, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, that January. Renowned for their energetic live show, Sherazada brought their brand of heaviness to hundreds across the state.
But just as things were picking up steam, the band lost two members. Glenn left to join Van Atta High and Dan, their fill-in bass player, went on to pursue his career in education. But these departures proved to be just another roadblock along the way…
Just days after Glenn left, the guys found John Proko, angel-voiced and sexy as hell, to play bass and add to the vocal attack. But the drum throne still needed to be filled. It wasn’t long before Sherazada made the call to long-time friend and resident death metal expert Marc Zakalik, a drummer plucked from relative obscurity all the way out in Michigan, to come and rage with them.
With a slew of new songs and a killer new lineup, the revamped Sherazada crew picked up right where they left off. When it was time to record a new EP, they turned to well-known producer Chris Badami (The Starting Line, Dillinger Escape Plan) at Portrait Studio. With a killer new record under their belt, the band embarked on a two-week east coast tour, playing to hundreds around the country.
But disaster threatened to strike again when Kyle left the band to pursue other ventures. The disaster was quickly averted when Giancarlo Fuertes joined the band, adding his monstrous growls and startling good looks to the mix. But after one show, disaster was back as Marc decided to be lame and move back to Michigan because he was broke, needed a job, and wanted to stop being a freeloader.
Soon after, the guys recruited Mike Martyniuk on drums. With a new breath of fresh air, a DIY attitude, and some help from great friends, the band independently produced a professional music video for Echoes In The Hall. Another tour beckoned, along with a headlining slot on Maryland’s Park Rock Fest and shows with Sky Eats Airplane, Eyes Set to Kill, Valencia, Madina Lake, Silverstein, and many, many more.
