Mrs.
Gowanus
By (H+) M.S.G.
(from the archives)

Mrs.
Gowanus, the line between us is so fine
What makes people act the way they do?
Mrs.
Gowanus, this bar will be forever ours
Why did you have to leave us so soon?
It couldn’t have been the right time
It couldn’t have been so soon
Mrs.
Gowanus, the lines between us are so fine
What secrets do you hide?
What futures can you tell me?
Looking into the cup you hold
Mrs.
Gowanus, are you really so old,
That you alone know,
When the truth becomes lies,
Through the passage of time?
Mrs.
Gowanus, why are you singing to the stones?
Do they tell you what you need to know?
Our seats are so far away
Mrs.
Gowanus, the line between us is so fine
What makes people act the way they do?
Mrs.
Gowanus, are we really losing you?

You knew you were the last of you kind
The mountains never seemed so high
It was your laugh that had set us on the edge
There was nothing else like it, we were scared
Your dark eyes told us you made up you mind
There was no cliff but we could feel it there
There was no fall but we were still scared
We were between you and them

Your descent to the valleys was fluid
One step followed another, content in the knowing
That no snow could ever touch you
Those icy feathers all around you sublime in fear
It was all so understandable to us
They knew they could never match you

(Catherine: verse 1 and refrain)

Was the light in your eyes, blinding
Could you even see them at all?
The light on you was perfect
There were no flaws, your skin was glass
The way your shoulder turned told us
You knew any way was a good way
If we would just understand the truth of it
And let it burn the darkness away

We really felt like we were there with you
At the time you gave yourself away so fully
That we believed in what you wanted
Please don’t let us be mistaken
You are everlasting, in our world
You are everlasting

(Amara: verse 2 and refrain)

Your walk to us was paralyzing
So hot the sweating stopped, we were in trouble then
Feeling so dizzy we couldn’t remember how
You rolled over us like liquid lead
Too slow, leaving those blisters on our skin
And we leave slow trails to mark our passing
It just left you laughing, simple syrup is ready
And mixes in no traces left marking
But then you left it at that, no others left
If the waters will take us and cool

A glance burned through the licorice ropes
We bound you with, empty calories couldn’t hold you over
Tapped and wilt us with the green of your eyes
Slick from the saturation you’ll find yourself
Trying to grasp the true separation
Of pleasure and pain, eternal through now
You’ll let yourself feel the occasional attack
And stretch like taffy in preparation of the water
That sprays with bubbles when you slip inside

(Seraphina: verse 2 and refrain)
(From the Amara EP)

A last touch had said it all so clearly
Color bleeding from the broken edges
And leaving subtle stains on our fingers
As we work against dying fog concealing
This place we found as time furrows
But still there was no sense of fear
Only the laughter gleaming in your eyes
And the call of dogs someplace far off
Subtle tapping spread the stain further
The shadows no longer showed you there

The evening stars cast light through the briars
That leaves no trail upon your arms
And you are the source of visions
Calling the hilltops home to us
While the rain was pouring down
Our skin was glittering wet
The twilight had its hold on us
But at the time we felt no difference

(Melantha: verse 3 and refrain)

We found ourselves in quiet places
Though there would be no guarantee
That it would remain that way for long
When you locked the door, windows bolted
And you hid the key away, no more play
You said that what we dream is made real
We couldn’t help but think of nightmares
When you said none would leave until we screamed

With both hands you pushed aside any hesitation
The second you took hold we knew
The one way street we were taking
Wiry, lean, assured, and standing
Your stomach was warm granite, resisting
This would be ending badly, we gave in

(Valantina: verse 2 and refrain)
(From the Amara EP)
