Our cd on singing knives was just reviewed by foxy digitals. This is what they wrote:
"Fiercely beautiful arcs of droning strings and flute swirl with the burning of a desert sun. This is rich and spicy music full of eastern tones and smoke-filled ragas. The fact this collective gather sandstorms from Denmark adds to the mystique. Singing Knives first release of 2009 is a twenty-minute prayer of improvised rolling drones and instrumental tapestries that warrant comparison to Harappian Night Recordings, Tony Conrad and MV & EE’s Medicine Show. The four movements drive a raucous sound with loose percussion, stringed drones and various wind/ brass explorations. Shiggajon are suitably placed on the Singing Knives label, as they express a kinship in expression to Chora, Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides, Hunter Gracchus and the whole UK/EU improv scene (not jazz), which has gathered a powerful momentum over the past two years. The depth of cultural reference shifts in an uncertain limbo, with primitive Anglo and rich Arab heritages. The forms and visuals, which profoundly trickle through ones ears and into your eyes are marred with Technicolor images from Jodorowsky and middle eastern simulacra – something like Rudyard Kipling filtered through mescaline.
The first movement begins with a rising droned string that hovers above flute and various unidentified tones. A heat driven madness permeates, and sets the music deep into your consciousness. This is music you can’t escape from. I find it very consuming and is definitely something that needs to be played loud and clearly. The second piece feels a little lighter, yet a direct intensity is still present. This is a dusk dance that is as hypnotic as it is erotic. The slow pounding percussion sits at a soft distance behind the lead wind. The third piece traverses back to a saturated afternoon. It is once again vehemently engaging. There is a droning raga that whirls with exquisite motion, snakelike, menacing. A bird song tweets ahead, a mercy call over the danger. Finally a low tone, (brass I think), wavers with vocal chanting. Twittering alto appears as an outsider that gets entangled in a hostile gaggle. This is most definitely an ominous record of wonderful realism. The humour and playfulness of much improvised music has been removed; and rather than a soulless cacophony, we are left with an emotional torrent of complexity. This has elements that could be compared to free-jazz players like Ayler and Doyle, yet I feel it sits closer to the traditional playing of eastern street performers, as so eloquently recorded by Deben Bhattacharya. 7/10 -- Peter Taylor (27 May, 2009)"Link

"fire sange i gul og rød" was just officially released on singing knives. Four tracks of ethnopsych / acidfolk. Volcanic tongue writes:
”Fantastic new CD on the great Singing Knives label, rapidly becoming one of the UK’s most consistently impressive labels. Shiggajon are a collective based in Denmark that combine lucid string drones with ritualistic atmospheres and a wild free jazz stance. It makes sense that Singing Knives are behind this as there are definite parallels between Shiggajon and the Harappian Night Recordings album, with a lunar field recording quality that would combine Asian-tinged modal run-downs with buzzing Tony Conrad/Bill Breeze-styled vortices of tone. Some tracks orbit the same Cherry/Blackwell fourth world flute/drum exchanges previously explored by Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides and if this was British I’d be listing it alongside those guys and John Clyde-Evans’ Fisheye LP as a landmark UK drone side. Still, the European roots make sense, joining the dots between the kinda fluxing folk/psych moves documented by the Ohr label and the contemporary freak scene. Excellent.“
In stock in the pcib-distro, at the shiggajon HQ, and at singing knives. It's cheap.

Our split tape with dreamers cloth is released today. It's limited to 100 ex and can be aquired here, through dreamers cloth, or on ikuisuus.net. Ikuisuus writes:
"Split tape including two more or less new Danish acts. In these recordings (made during past 6 months) huge collective Shiggajon was five people playing out many kinds of musical experiments & improvisations, with large amounts of instruments (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, water, electric guitar, cello, scrap metal, violin, cembalo, bells, didgeridoo, bottles, chimes, drums, paper, and flutes). Floating orchestral jams to alienspace deep mystic drones, krautrock freakouts & free jazz moods from the structures of academic darkness - to the atmospheric swirls of heavenly light.
Dreamer's Cloth is a solo project by Jonas Frederiksen from Beyond Repair cassette label. Diving underwater in the ambient dreamlands of fantasy creatures and unknown high sky visions. Beautiful & psychedelic new age bliss-sound drones, for the fans of Tangerine Dream, Ashtray Navigations, Family Underground, Skaters, Dolphins Into The Future."
You can buy it here; it's 5 euros.
It can also be aquired through ikuisuus, dreamers cloth, or in the Århusian record stores route 66 and dandelion.

I recently stumbled upon this foxy digitals-review 'levende vand':
"Albert Ayler seems to be the spiritual forefather to much of the jazz-informed avant gunk currently gushing from basements across the globe. On face, this is something of a curiosity, as few of Ayler's acolytes share the melodic sensibility that was the backbone of the sax player's work. Most of the acts today identify more emotionally than sonically. They sense the abandon that Ayler felt, the devotion to his muse that pushed him away from most of the jazzmen of the day. In pursuit of his holy aurals, Ayler dipped into marching music, old spirituals, and, towards the end of his career, rock and roll. Today's energy-music practitioners do not share Ayler's specific musical and cultural background; rather they share his mystic vision, his fluid approach and his belief in music as a higher force over worldly trappings.
So now we have the Danes of Shiggajon channeling Ayler through another vessel. One part warbling free jazz, one part commune rock, Shiggajon is largely brass-driven but feels different from the more explicitly out-jazz outfits like Owl Xounds Exploding Galaxy or Graveyards. It could be the emphasis on Christian esoterica or the heaping helpings of cosmic guitar work, but Shiggajon bears more than a passing resemblance to the musical rituals of Ya Ho Wha 13. Replace Yod's barrel-chested code-sermons with star-licking saxophone squeals and you've got yourself a dead ringer-though second coming would probably be the better phrase.
Both sides of "Levende Vand" maintain an admirable level of excitement and mystery, trading off drone meditation for psych majesty for jazz elation. The tile translates roughly into "water of life," which could not be more appropriate, as this music is constantly trickling into something else, becoming something but never quite being. Stay tuned after the B-side fades, and you'll be treated to a excoriating, overdriven blowout miles away from the carefully executed sounds otherwise found here."
A new shiggajon-tape is ready. The tape is limited to 12 ex and is called 'fire sange i gul og rød'. Very soon, it will be free to download. Go to:

>Our split-tape with SOYC just got reviewed by Bryan Berge in the Tape Hiss-column of stylus magazine. This is what was written of us:
"Shiggajon is based in Arhus (couldn’t find the shortcut for the krouzek), the second-largest city in Jutland. Their piece, titled “Forklarelsen Pa Bjarget,” refers to the transubstantiation of Christ on the mountain. The Christian theme doesn’t dominate the piece explicitly, but it does figure in now and then, particularly in an interesting stretch that seems to drag a gospel choir in over the slur of raga-tinged string drones at the base of Shiggajon’s sound. Shiggajon, however, are not to be counted among the drone and noise crew, despite their affection for both. The band is too restless, venturing at a brisk but unhurried pace into percussive ritual, chime-laden folk reverie, and smoky, serpentine Eastern vamps. Their sound seems informed by an idealistic bucolia, undeterred by issues of cultural appropriation and the over-analysis such issues engender, focused instead on a private spiritual aurality informed by multiple cultures, texts, and musical modes."

Shiggajon is looking for a singer. Female! For doing stuff with microphones and pure un-amplified vocal-stuff. Maybe also some drumming. We practise a lot and are planning on practising even more. Put all your shyness aside. If you like us, please do give it a try. If you don't live in Århus, there should be room for one more in our house.

Today our split-tape with SOYC on plane crash in boxes is released. PCIB writes:
"You want to get this one. First ever release from Jutlandish Shiggajon and the to date most ragapsychish release from the marvellous SOYC of Sjælland. The SOYC side is one track of great shruti box-folk. Like eastern chanting with a groovy psych-folk twist. Hippie-trance-folk just the way you like it. The Shiggajon side is the composition ‘Forklarelsen på bjerget’ (The transfiguration on the mountain for the biblically oriented to spot the Christian undercurrent). Going from drone-folk through more jazzy/gospel-like parts to pure atmospheric psych and collage, this is no usual folk-track. All in all – a piece of more western folk from western Denmark and one of more eastern folk from eastern Denmark. Bonus for packaging-fetishists: paintings, silk-screens and photos"
Which is pretty much what is to be said about it. If you want one of these, you can either buy it from us or from plane crash in boxes (www.planecrashinboxes.com or www.myspace.com/planecrashinboxes).
We have also got a cd-r version of 'Forklarelsen på bjerget' which is our side of the tape. It is 2$ if you buy it with the tape and 4$ if you don't. We've done a lot of listening, and agree that the sound on the tape is a lot better than that on the cd, so considering that and the fancy tape-artwork, we recommend the tape.

Hey Mikkel! My address is gianthammer@hotmail.co.uk. I should be fine to arrange the Manchester show for October 3rd if that's OK wth you guys? Give me an e-mail anyhow?

Hi there, friend! If you haven't discovered this on my profile, then I just want to let you know that I got my first album online on the danish downtempo/psychill label Zealotry Music and it's possible to download the whole album for free in nice quality. Feel free to listen, spread, play and trip to it:
Hørte Levende Vand her den anden dag. Virkelig mystisk musik på den fede måde. Den BM cd-r du sendte mig, har også fået mange ture i afspilleren. Dejligt, dansk drone.
Håber, I havde et godt nytår og fik fejret Jesu fødselsdag med manér. /Christian
