Shima are an acoustic trio comprising of harpist Natalia Mann, percussionist Naomi Sullivan and singer Emma Bathgate . Using fluid narratives and elemental concepts together they create audible journeys as the departure point for their music.
Their music has been described as ‘aural geography’ and ‘sonic story-telling’. Shima began in Australia in 2000 and are currently based in Istanbul, Marseille and Melbourne. They are interested in cross disciplinary processes and how audiences are situated, relate and participate in the musical process.
Shima navigates the sublime, the profound spaciousness of silence between notes and together weave subtle sound-scapes. They invite the listener into a musical world of intimism, adventure and uncharted lands. Their collective inspiration of the experience of physical matter, place, migrational flux and land is reflected in their song work. On this site the song The Journey follows a narrative the musicians hold inside of the big long ships departing from Europe and journeying to the ‘unknown’ and most ancient of lands Australia.

About the artists:
Natalia Mann is a natural, wild and commanding improvisor, drawing musically from diverse contexts: world music to contemporary, jazz, classical, electronic and meditative forms. Bringing grace and originality to all of her collaborations, Natalia draws on her rich background of classical and traditional music, and her natural aptitude for improvisation and experimentation.
Her past collaborations, recordings and performances include: Sunga, Richard Nunns, Goksel Baktagir, Izzet Kizil, Bic Runga, Mark Vanilau, Fat Freddy's Drop, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, David Jones, Nicky Bomba. She holds a BMus in classical Music Performance from the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne Australia. Her mentors are Xanya Mamunya, Richard Nunns, Carolyn Mills, and Donovan Mixon with whom she currently studies jazz.
Naomi Jean O'Sullivan as a musician and percussionist has a textural and intuitive approach. With roots in folk and world music and long-term experience in jazz and electronic groups, she has a versatility that lends itself to compositional improvisation. Her exotic instrumentation is a distinctive collection of bells, gongs, shakers and flutes with a customized ‘drum-kit’ type set up. Naomi's alchemy of rhythmic and atmospheric elements also extends to her specialization in ‘body percussion’. Naomi also sings in crystal clear tones and produces her own electro-acoustic music. In Australia Naomi, has studied with percussion master Greg Sheehan and is a founding member of Twelve Tone Diamonds, and the Twelve Tone Orchestra - a homage to Miles Davis’ electric music. Since immigrating to the south of France in 2006, she has performed with Daevid Allen (Gong), La Force Molle, Jacques Dudon and several Marseille music, theatre and dance collectives.tanding Cabaret, Best of the Fringe 2002 & Melbourne Comedy Barry Award 2000.
Emma Bathgate's voice is vast and has the ability to sing from her soul. With a captivating and powerful stage presence, Emma sings experimental, improvisation, cabaret, jazz and traditional song forms. Her recent stage successes by her award winning character The Dilapidated Diva www.dilapidateddiva.com is now polarised in a new song performance project www.myspace.com/emasong with Simon Eszeky and other Melbourne musicians. Her past collaborations have been with Orchestra Murphy (UK), Andy Diagram (UK), and Australian musicians Justin Holland, William Poskitt and Ben Winkelman, Tim O’Dwyer, Mik Lavage, Snuff Puppets, and theatre directors Barry Laing & Glynnis Angel. Emma is a long term student of Ukrainian Bel Canto Master: Mira Melton and is also a student of Tibetan Buddhism. She has a Masters: VCA-Melbourne University in Community Cultural Development, attended Central St Martins School of Art and is the recipient of Green Room Award 2003 for Most Outstanding Cabaret, Best of the Fringe 2002 & Melbourne Comedy Barry Award 2000.

Shima est un trio acoustique de harpe, voix et percussions, créateur de voyages sonores. Shima a débuté en Australie en 2000 et bien que ses trois musiciennes vivent dans trois pays différents, elles continuent à travailler régulièrement ensemble.

Natalia Mann
Née en Nouvelle-Zélande, descendante de Samoens, Natalia Mann allie à une formation classique une aptitude naturelle à l’expérimentation. Très demandée comme artiste de scène et de studio, elle a une remarquable capacité d’adaptation aux contextes musicaux les plus divers. Des styles variés de la world music aux expressions contemporaines, électroniques et méditatives, Natalia apporte grâce et originalité à toutes ses collaborations.
Basée à Istanbul, elle tourne internationalement avec, entre autres,
Bic Runga et le trio de musique du Pacifique Sunga. En Turquie elle se produit régulièrement avec l’ensemble classique contemporain très réputé de Goksel Baktagir et continue son travail avec « Brown Roots Collective », association culturelle des arts du Pacifique.
Emma Bathgate
Emma Bathgate est une artiste riche et imprevisable. Chanteuse d’opéra formée au ‘Bel Canto’ et également pendant de nombreuses années chanteuse de cabaret et artiste de scène, elle est dotée d’une présence puissante et d’un répertoire vaste. Jouant avec des formes de chansons traditionnelles, Emma mêle envols de vocalises, harmonies primales, poésie et histoires chantées pour exprimer un point de vue profond et drôle sur l’existence. Formée par ses expériences au sein du London Music Collective et récompensée pour sa propre création « The Dilapidated Diva » (La Diva décrépite), Emma est une passionnée de l’improvisation, engagée dans l’exploration du dialogue entre l’artiste et le public, le groupe et l’individu.
Elle est auteur compositeur, se produisant en tant que soliste ou en collaboration avec plusieurs formations australiens et elle vient d’achever un Masters en Développement Culturel des Communautés au Victorian College of the Arts en Australie.
Naomi Jean O’Sullivan
Naomi Jean est une percussionniste dont l’approche est à la fois structurée et intuitive. Enracinée dans la music folk, la world music et une longue expérience dans des groupes de jazz et de musique électronique, elle atteint une universalité qui l’amène tout naturellement à la composition improvisée.
Son instrumentation est totalement originale, jouant d’une collection exotique de cloches, gongs, shakers et flûtes et d’un assemblage très personnel de drums, elle crée une alchimie d’éléments rythmiques et atmosphériques.
Spécialiste de «body percussion» (percussion corporelle) Naomi est aussi chanteuse et produit sa propre musique électro-acoustique. En Australie elle fut l’un des membres fondateurs de Twelve Tone Diamonds et du Twelve Tone Orchestra, qui rendent hommage à la musique électrique de Miles Davis.
Depuis son installation en France en 2006, elle a joué avec Daevid Allen (Gong), La Force Molle, Jacques Dudon et plusieurs collectifs marseillais de musique, théâtre et danse La Force Molle , Contact, Hakili). En 2008, elle est invitée à diriger ‘Le Monde Harmonique’ pour la 8eme edition des Noces Harmoniques, avec l’A.E.H. - Atelier d’Exploration Harmonique
