Workshop Instructors for Shimmy for the Cure! Colorado - 2009:

June 13th . . .

10am-12pm: Selayma’s Funkified Pop Choreography Workshop

Suitable for all belly dance styles, this workshop will focus on alternative options for dance expression, with a choreography set to popular Middle Eastern pop music. Focusing on isolations, as well as dramatic, slinky moments-in-time, you will recognize and explore movements and combos taken from various styles that together creates a dynamic and visually exciting performance. From this workshop, you will take away full choreography notes, as well as a better understanding of "how" to incorporate a little funk-y into your shimm-y!

1pm-3pm: Artemis’s Turkish Rromany (Gypsy) & Skirt Dance Workshop

The Turkish Rromany (Gypsy) people have performed in Turkey for the past 1000 years. They were the most famous street performers during the Ottoman Empire. This is the mother of Turkish Oriental dance. Artemis will teach steps, hip and pelvic articulations, isolations, gestures and some short combinations. This material is perfect for your Tribal, Oriental or Rromany dance vocabulary. She will also teach about the music, history, costuming and culture of this illusive population.

June 13th . . .

~All Saturday Events are located at Swallow Hill Music Association: 71 East Yale Avenue - Denver~

June 14th . . .

10am-12pm: Artemis’ Turkish Oriental Dance Workshop

This is the dance that was historically referred to as "the dance that could melt a stone." Turkish Oriental dance is the daughter of Turkish Rromany (Gypsy) dance, the Court dances of the Ottoman Empire and Arabic Oriental Dance. It is less elegant than it's Egyptian sister dance but what it loses in elegance, it makes up for with spontaneity and passion. This workshop will include steps, hip and pelvic articulation, knee lifts and turns.

1pm-3pm: Rafi’ah’s Drum Drama Workshop

Dancing to the drum is not ALL about your hips. Spice it up with new & exciting ways to interpret a drum piece. Embellish a variety of shimmies with snakey arms, layered undulations and contrasting slinky walks. Add flare to hip accents with East Indian hands and flamenco flavorings. Combinations starting with simple to more complex versions for all levels and styles...taken from Rafi'ahs Indian/Arabic drum choreography.

~All Sunday Events are located at Swallow Hill Music Association: 71 East Yale Avenue - Denver~

And of course, don't forget the Henna Party, beginning at 5:00pm at Under the Umbrella Cafe . . . and Hafla at Mercury Cafe on the 12th!

  • 2008/6/4 16:51

My plans have changed drastically as usual. I will not be attending Shimmy this year. Not only that but I won't be attending the Royal Arch Degrees in Acron or caving near Eagle either.

Lost my job so I'm off to Apogaea since I'm getting a free ride it seems the most economcal of all the choices beside staying home and doing nothig which I just can't do.

    Love you, Jim
