After two tours and three albums The Grass split in two halves. Patrick McNally, Lindsay Rogers and Nicholas Wolfe, remained in Ottawa while the other members returned to Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia half decided to continue as The Grass and recruit new members, the Ottawa half, left without instruments and recording equipment, loaned equipment from the Ottawa RCMP marching band.
They named themselves Ship-Shapes in respect to how the borrowed instruments must be returned.
Ship-Shapes wrote fifty songs in the first week and then selected 10 for inclusion on their debut album. Nick Johannes, from The Kettle Black, moved in to teach Ship-Shapes the best and easiest way to record. Their goal: to record and release an album in one month featuring only Ship-Shapes and selected non-musicians. Every aspect of the album was created by the three core members’ -from drumming and engineering to microphone placement and cover art design.
The new record will be available only on Lp. It is called “Shuffle On, Soldier”.
Live, Ship-Shapes resembles a eager monster, ever hungry for musical instruments to feed its onstage output. Their album cannot be recreated accurately with only three members, and some things must be changed for live purposes, so they each play several things at once, at all times.
Ship-Shapes will be performing in and around Ottawa for the rest of the summer, then planning an extensive touring schedule. Their next album, a louder, more spontaneous effort, will be released before Christmas. It will be called “Bat-Man”. Shortly after a 7inch EP, “Springsteen”, will be released. It will contain six songs.
