Shire Hall's Blurbs |
About me:
Shire Hall in Monmouth is a Grade I listed building and was the scene of one of
the most significant trials in British history when, in 1839/40, John Frost and
other Chartists were tried for their involvement in the Chartist Riots in Newport.
People in Monmouth and Monmouth Town Council are helping Monmouthshire County Council to
restore and refurbish Shire Hall and make it accessible to everybody.
Wanna help us with the restoration of Shire Hall? Please add us as
a friend and come back to see what's going on.

The Heritage Lottery Fund bid
Monmouthshire County Council, who own the building, worked with with Monmouth Town Council and the Shire Hall Stewards (representatives of the local community) to apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a Heritage Grant towards the cost of restoration of the building and make it the focus of loads of activities in the town.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be £4.5 million. We asked the Heritage Lottery Fund for £3 million, and the rest of the money will come from
fundraising activities and contributions from other organisations.
What do we want for Shire Hall?
Our and Mission Statement
for Shire Hall is:
To conserve this significant and historic building, to make it accessible to all, to bring to life its rich heritage and to position it as a vital community
resource.
We want the restoration of probably the best Georgian public building in Wales!
Shire Hall should be used to present the story of the town, in particular, the
Chartist Trials.
Shire Hall will introduce the town and its history to visitors and local people and to encourage them to explore its unique history and heritage.
The building will continue to be used for community
activities like meetings, themed events, functions, conferences and
training.
Recent History
A study by Niall Philips Architects in 1999 showed the importance of the
building in architectural and historic terms and said that its condition
was deteriorating. The study proposed it should be restored and managed as a vibrant
civic and community facility for the benefit of the town.
The
Chartist Trials
In 1839/40, John Frost and his colleagues were tried for their involvement
in the Chartist Riots in Newport.
The setting for this drama was Shire Hall's Courtroom No. 1, which remains prttey much exactly the same to this day. The story of the Chartists has helped to
shape the democracy we enjoy today.
