Since Garbage is on an indefinite hiatus, fans have speculated whether or not Manson will record a solo CD. This issue was finally confirmed on March 1, 2006, when record producer David Arnold's official Web site announced, "David has just completed writing and producing with Shirley Manson, lead singer of Garbage, for her new upcoming project". Later, the fan site Garbage Disco Box reported that this project was the writing and recording of a song. Billboard.com reported that she intends to record a solo album; Manson insists Garbage has not broken up.
Manson revealed to the Sunday Times on July 2, 2006,that she had contacted Paul Buchanan of the Scottish group Blue Nile to write with her for her solo album. "I thought he’d be very moody and introverted, but he’s not like that at all. He’s quite outgoing and charming. Neither of us has ever written with anybody else before. It’s going to be strange. We’ll see how it goes — it could be a complete unmitigated disaster.”
She met up with Buchanan at his Glasgow studio in July 2006 to begin their work together. Manson had previously stated on her online journal[8], "there's nobody quite like Paul Buchanan to bring the bleakness out in me".
Buchanan spoke to the Sunday Mail on October 29, 2006, and revealed that as well as working with Arnold, and himself, Manson also has teamed up with White Stripes frontman Jack White and Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan to help write "stunning tunes" for her debut, as well as confirming the record would be released in 2007.
"I knew Shirley's work from her days in Scottish bands Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie and Angelfish and had heard the records she'd made with Garbage. But we'd never met, so I couldn't believe it when this rather formal e-mail arrived saying, 'Dear Mr. Buchanan...' The fact Shirley was motivated to ask me to write songs made it worth pursuing. I was worried my music wouldn't fit in with the rocky stuff Jack White and Billy Corgan would come up with, but Shirley said, 'Don't worry, I want you to do what you do'. Sometimes the unlikeliest combinations work best - it gets you out of the comfort zone.
"I made a conscious effort to write the songs from Shirley's perspective. It only took 5 minutes to compose them, but I'd had six weeks to come up with ideas. Shirley is keen to bounce ideas off different people after taking a break from Garbage."
Buchanan and Manson entered the studio together in December 2006 to record tracks for her album.
On November 18, 2006, Buchanan revealed Manson also was working with Beck on her new album.
Manson also is to appear on Eric Avery's forthcoming solo album, however a cover version of a John Lennon track with Avery on an Amnesty International charity compilation is now not going to happen.
On March 31, 2007, The Times reported that Shirley was set to record with The Bird and the Bee member Greg Kurstin who has recently written for or performed on records by Nelly Furtado, Lily Allen, Flaming Lips and Sophie Ellis Bextor.
Music
The Trick is to Keep Breathing
Her first experience with music was with the bands Autumn 1904 and Wild Indians. When she was 16, Shirley joined Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, with whom she sang backup vocals and played the keyboards. She remained in the band for a decade until they split in 1992. After the split, Shirley and two other members of the band formed Angelfish; this time she was the lead singer. Angelfish released a self-titled album and one single, 'Suffocate Me'. Shirley has cited Siouxsie Sioux from the post-punk band Siouxsie & the Banshees as a main influence on her when she was growing up.
About me: THIS IS A SHIRLEY MANSON FAN SITE!!!
ANYONE WHO ADMIRES EITHER SHIRLEY OR GARBAGE, IS WELCOMED HERE!!! ;-)
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland on August 26th 1966. The lead of Garbage, Shirley Manson lived a rather difficult life. Her family which included an older and younger sister as well as a Big Band singer for a mother and a professor of animal breeding and poultry genetics as a father, Shirley's family was in no way poor. Yet despite growing up in good home, Shirley was not a very happy little girl. Like most red heads, Shirley was teased relentlessly at school. To make matter worse, kids found her eyes to be protruding and found countless names to make fun of her for that too. Some of the times, she would return home bloody and bruised. This would result in her developing a nervous anxiety and subsequently turned the once happy little girl into a depressed suicidal.
During her teenage years, the poor bullied soul began to lash out, dressing awkwardly, drinking, smoking cigarettes & hanging out with kids much older then herself. She was going through a difficult phase of self hatred. She began to cut herself & lost her virginity at the young age of 15. Needless to say her school grades went down the drain.
At the age of sixteen, she joined her boyfriend's rock band, Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie as a backup singer and a keyboardist. The band lasted around ten years before it broke up. Soon after that she joined another band called Angelfish. The band had a few hits that made it to MTV but in general they weren't all that good. The band broke up & Shirley was without a band.
She later auditioned for Garbage & the band mates were stunned by her talent. Butch had seen saw her on MTV and wanted to meet her. They knew she was the one for them.
Garbage was an imminent success & currently has four albums to its name. While she still deals with self acceptance, Shirley is definitely not the sad little girl from her past.

Shirley Manson and Garbage are teaming up again after a break of nearly four years.
The band plan to record a song and discuss recording a “bummer Leonard Cohen meets Mazzy Star” album as well as a world tour.Edinburgh-born singer Shirley and the three American musicians who make up the rock band have been speaking again in recent weeks about working together in the studio and possibly touring.
Drummer and former Nirvana producer Butch Vig described Garbage as a “dysfunctional democracy” and said it was only a matter of timing when they got back together.
He confirmed the band will begin working on a new song in a few weeks and said: “We’ll see what happens.”
Butch met Shirley, left, earlier this month and they discussed working together again.
Shirley, 42, put her music career on hold after a solo album was rejected by Geffen Records for being “too noir”. She has been starring as terminator Catherine Weaver in US sci-fi series The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but the series was axed in May.
