Shirzad Sharif was born 1977 in Tehran, Iran and was raised in a highly acclaimed musical family which has nurtured the likes of the Tar ("Persian Lute") Grand Master Ostad Farhang Sharif, this exposed him to the intricacies of Persian classical music from an early childhood which was inspired by his grandmother's elaborate drumming. While in Iran Shirzad had the great privilege of studying the Tonbak drum under the direct supervision of the great Tonbak Grand Master Ostad Bahman Rajabi which is considered to be one of the most innovative and progressive Persian schools of thought ("Maktab") with heavy emphasis on creativity, musical and artistic freedom.
Shirzad also learned the ancient Kurdish sacred lute known as Tanbur which is widely used in Sufi ceremonies and is considered to be one of the most sacred instruments in Iran. He also performs the Daf which is also another Kurdish sacred Suf[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[iframe]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] drum. Learning these folkloric instruments further increased his knowledge of the rich folkloric musical traditions of the rich Iranian culture. Since coming to the United States he continued expanding his percussive studies by researching Arabic and other Middle Eastern instruments and drumming techniques, rhythms and forms which led to him learning the Arabic tambourine known as Riqq,
Shirzad has performed in major national academic universities such as the University of Maryland, University of Utah, UCLA, San Franicosco State University, UCSF, UC Berkeley & Stanford University as well as some of the most sought after mainstream and underground art scenes & venues in San Francisco, New York, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, San Diego, Toronto & Washington D.C.
He is the founder and musical director of Som'ma and Som'ma Dub Ensemble which has been actively been involved with producing some of the most progressive, modern & contemporary forms of Persian art music in the world.
Some of these performances and collaborations include world class traditional Persian, fusion of Persian-Arabic, fusion of Persian-Indian-Arabic, fusion of Indian-Persian as well as avant-garde Persian, Sacred Persian Sufi, Persian modal Jazz, Persian Electronica & Persian dub music projects with some of the most ground-breaking and widely respected musicians & visionaries in each respective genre.
